ipad Mini or itouch?

DS (just 9) has asked for an itouch or a mini ipad. I am reluctant to get him something this major, but don't want to get him more toys/stuff. I also would like my ipad back (this would be the gift from Santa so I don't think we can give him mine). Obviously the mini ipad is more expensive than the itouch, but I am just wondering how useful the itouch will be. Right now he uses the ipad for games and reading when we travel. The mini ipad just seems like such an expensive gift.

Any thoughts?

Mini seems more practical and it's not that much more expensive, especially if you buy the original version.
