I bought DS the 2014 Guinness World Records book at Costco. He loves that stuff and can read it over and over so I always pick them up for him when I find them. Usually the books are softcover and smaller and I just give them to him quietly so not a big deal with my other kids feeling left out. This one is big and hardcover so I don't think I can get away with giving it to him without getting something for the 3 girls. DH and I decided we'd just do books for everyone one night of Hanukkah.

I am having a hard time finding something for the girls - ages 7 and almost 5. I don't want to do any regular chapter books for DD1 because her tastes are a bit fickle and it's frustrating to buy and then have her not want it. We have a great library 5 minutes away and get lots of stuff from there. I'm trying to find something a bit more special, maybe with great illustrations. Something they can enjoy looking at over and over. She's not as into all the non-fiction type stuff DS was into but I think that something sort of general-knowledge that is age appropriate with nice pictures might work. Or, even just a good story that has more substance than something like Robert Munsch, which we love around here but have a ton of so it's nothing special IYKWIM.

We have a few of the hardcover Disney compilation books that my younger 2 like. They pretend they are chapter books which makes them happy because they are like their older siblings. We also have a Pinkalicious one and a Curious George one. Something along those lines would work also.

Any ideas?

My 7 year old likes these books:

http://www.amazon.com/Inside-Your-Body-Katie-Daynes/dp/079451233X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384184090&sr=8-1&keywords=usborne+body+books (There are several books in the "See Inside" series)

http://www.amazon.com/Very-First-Encyclopedia-Winnie-Friends/dp/0786836393/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1384184178&sr=8-2&keywords=disney+nature+encyclopedia (It looks like they don't make this series anymore, which is too bad because both my girls really like them! We have 3 or 4 of them. My MIL got them for older DD when she was 6 and she enjoyed them for many years.)

And we have an older version of this one: http://www.amazon.com/Nat-Geo-Wild-Animal-Atlas/dp/1426306997/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1384184305&sr=8-15&keywords=national+geographic+encyclopedia+of+anima ls

Thanks! The "See Inside" series ones look perfect. We have a very similar one on the human body from DS. It's by Owl Kids and got lots of love and as a result lots of the moving flaps are broken. My little ones recently picked it up with interest so maybe a fresh one would work. I could just find 3 different topics from the same series.

We also have an older version of that National Geographic animal Atlas. Oh, along with every other National Geographic kids atlas and almanac...

I'm getting 5 y/o DS "Everything On It (http://www.amazon.com/Every-Thing-On-Shel-Silverstein/dp/0061998168/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384192598&sr=8-1&keywords=Everything+on+it)" by Shel Silverstein. He loves stuff that is a little dark and morbid, though (as do I!) Last Christmas we got him this Star Wars encyclopedia (http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Character-Encyclopedia-DK/dp/0756682533/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384192547&sr=8-1&keywords=star+wars+encyclopedia) and it was probably his favorite gift.

I'd look for a nice pop-up book for your 7 yo. Those are hot commodities around here.

Books should all arrive tomorrow and now I am done with Hanukkah shopping! I already have the toy gifts they want stashed away in my closet - rainbow looms with extra elastics for older kids and dolls and playmobil sets for little two.
