DS (4.5 ys) has not really been into legos. we've only got duplos so far, but he's just never really been interested much beyond someone else putting together the set.

however, in the last week or so he's started playing with them on his own

and of course, we got a lego catalog in the mail this weekend and he started saying he wants santa to bring some legos

sooo... i guess we'll do some legos

but thinking it's time to move him to regular size, rather than duplo, right?

though i'm worried that his fine motor might end up frustrating him

can anyone reco good starter sets for establishing basics and also being less complicated to assemble?

thanks

They're coming out with some great junior sets in early 2014 if you want to wait for that. I wish they had been around when my boys were starting. Here's some info: http://toysnbricks.com/lego-juniors-2014-sets-images-10675-10672-10665-10666-10668-10667-10673/

Those little $4-ish bags at Target, etc. are usually pretty easy.

These kind of sets are nice: http://creative.lego.com/en-us/products/Default.aspx#4636

These are all for 4-7 year olds:

DS2 is 4.5 yrs old and is getting this set for Christmas from DH's grandparents. He has a 10 yr old brother though so he's been playing with regular Legos since he was 2.

He is also getting this basic set of Lego bricks since this is what DS1 started out with when he was 5. I like that it comes with a base plate.

I had this one on his wish list as well.

Regular Legos are great for improving fine motor skills. I started letting DS2 play with them when he was 2 after reading this somewhere.

My son just turned 5. He currently wants to be a fireman, so my choices were no brainers. He didn't make these by himself, but he did help (and he has figured out how to fix them when they break).
