Since early this year I've been reading "the bible" to the kids during dinner most week nights, usually 2 stories at a time. We've gone through, "Children's Stories of the the Bible, from the old and new testatments," and "The Usborne Children's Bible." Now the kids (well mostly DD1) want another book. Any suggestions? The general format runs from creation through the ascension, though the Usborne bible did touch on Pentacost.

As a reference, the first one was a little tough to get through because they included all the prophets, both major and minor, and the dialogue was in King James English. I did think they did a great job synopsing the story behind each prophet (I sure learned a lot! lol). The Usborne was a little too simple at times. So something in between?

this one! http://www.amazon.com/The-Childs-Story-Bible-Catherine/dp/0802850111

we love it. its a bit "harder" or more "advanced" then the Jesus Storybook Bible (which we also love).

We love the Jesus Storybook Bible too, and this one.

It's for a little bit older kids but DD1 enjoys it and the pictures are great!

We love the Big Picture Story Bible--stories are a little shorter than the Jesus Storybook Bible (which my husband hates because it's wordier than the original), and it does tie themes together nicely. http://www.amazon.com/The-Picture-Story-Bible-Book/dp/1433523914

The Jesus Storybook Bible is simply fantastic. A must. A fun one to do that I think will appeal to all 3 of your DC is The Rhyme Bible http://www.ebay.com/itm/The-Rhyme-Bible-Linda-J-Sattgast-Toni-Goffe-Good-Book-/310787389451?pt=US_Childrens_Books&hash=item485c5f380b.

I got this for my kids earlier in the year. It's an easy read and it's in chronological order and covers both OT and NT.

Thank you for this post, Melinda. I have been searching for an age- appropriate Bible for my toddlers too. We have the Jesus Storybook Bible but it's a bit wordy for kids under 3. We are buying books this Christmas for the kids so it would be nice to find a Bible I can actually read to the kids.

We like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Beginners-Bible-Timeless-Childrens-Stories/dp/0310709628/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1384863058&sr=1-3&keywords=child+bible

The Beginner Bible. Goes all the way through the Bible, including Pentecost, come of Paul's letters, etc.

For the under 3 set, we've enjoyed My Good Night Bible: http://www.amazon.com/My-Good-Night-Bible-Collection/dp/0784704066

Thinking of getting the Max Lucado one as well. There is a gap between DD1 and her sisters. They sometimes got lost in the older book I was reading and just lost interest. The Usborne book was more their speed. So right now I think two books would be good for us.

We got the Jesus Storybook Bible with CDs for my son a couple of Easters ago. We *love* it. In fact, I may have to get a second for our daughter because our son listens to the CDs so often (at bedtime) sharing may be difficult.

Love, love, love the Jesus Storybook Bible! We don't use it as our reading Bible, because it paraphrases things like the 23rd Psalm and the Lord's Prayer, but it's SUCH a good teacher of the whole salvation story! My son listens to the cd at bedtime often.

I know you are looking for a read-aloud, but I thought I would reply in case you want another idea. Last year when DD (now 10YO) made her first communion, I got her the Action Bible. It was highly recommended here on the BBB. DD *devoured* this book, finishing it in less than 2 days! she's gone back to it several times since the spring when she read it.

For a "real" bible, we got the Catholic Children's Bible, which DD's Catholic Church Religious Ed program (also their daily school) uses in their curriculum. It's very good for the school-aged kid (in between the bibles for very little kids, and the grown-up adult bible). And it's a complete bible; everything is included.

here's a link from the publisher's web site and I think you can look through it and find out more.

I can't say enough good things about these- they come in several volumes- something about the big pictures and easy to understand language really holds my 3.5 dds attention- and has for a year.

Yep, loved it here too. It's different, but it weaves all the stories together, which is kind of a nice approach.

I haven't read this one, but my husband is preparing Sunday school classes to begin teaching at the first of the year based on the adult version of this book. I might have to get the kids version now as we have gone through most of the usual kid's versions listed here.

That is fantastic!!!!! Wish our churches have done that! It actually makes DS more interested in the Bible. He was stoked to receive his own Bible to cross-reference!
