We went on a family recommendation.

Lots of folks recommend a flat fee person rather than someone who gets a commission/percentage. I recommend asking around to friends or colleagues. Our recommendation was through an older more settled colleague.

Thanks. Do you interview them at all? I spoke to someone who works at my bank and he said he gets paid through the bonds etc we buy. Has anyone ever gone through their bank for an advisor?

This...totally! We learned the hard way and can't recommend this approach highly enough. Once we decided to do that it way we scheduled several in-person meetings to narrow the list. We chose someone based on a strong gut feeling and have been extremely satisfied ever since. We knew ahead of time all what was important to us and he hit on almost all of those points the first time we got together.
