Dd is three and a half. She says santa is bringing her a princess toy. I don't think she has a particular one in mind. I'm not a huge fan of the princess thing, but I do like to get the kids what they want from Santa. I am sure she doesn't want a costume as she refuses to put those on.

Any suggestions for an inexpensive princess toy? Preferably not too many pieces.

Thanks!
Catherine

ETA: maybe something like this duplo set? http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Disney-Princess-Whites-Cottage/dp/B005VPRCQ4/ref=sr_1_30?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1385163785&sr=1-30&keywords=Princess. More pieces than I'd love, but it's a building toy which would make me feel better about the pretty pretty pink pink princess thing.

I saw that exact set at TJ Maxx this week. I don't know how much it was though.

Does she need a tea set? It would encourage pretend play. I've seen these in-store at Target and sometimes Kohl's: http://www.amazon.com/Disney-Princess-Tea-Snow-White/dp/B007389MOW/

My 3.5yo niece just got this princess toy, which has learning games on it: http://www.amazon.com/VTech-Disney-Princess-Magical-Learn/dp/B003FQCZ9A/

What about a game? Here's a Disney version of the Candy Land game: http://www.amazon.com/Candy-Land-Disney-Princess-Edition/dp/B0083TXXIQ/

Would a book qualify as a toy? DD has this and I'm giving one to my 3.5yo niece for Christmas this year: http://www.amazon.com/P-Is-Princess-Disney/dp/1423164717/

We have that set and it's ... lame. There aren't enough pieces to really build anything, though the bunny is cute and so is Snow White - that's an actual fabric skirt, BTW. If you want a building toy, get the big bucket of DUPLO blocks instead. (My DD is pretty good about putting them away. Also, TRU tends to run BOGO-50% on all basic LEGO & DUPLO, so you would have a shot at a full-price DUPLO bucket plus this set if you still wanted it.)

As for the princess thing, how about this:

Well, I live in princess central right now. DD1 really loves the princess Barbies. She. Plays out all sorts of silly stories with them and they play with her loving family people in the dollhouse often. We also have one of those fishing games with the princesses on it but you fish for gems. DD1 loves it. She really likes the princess Songs and Stories CDs. They do the songs from the movies and then tell the story of the princess. We do a lot of dress up but I know you said that is out. DD1 has asked for the baby doll versions of the princesses and there is a princess with a horse toy at Costco that she goes crazy for everytime we are there. As someone who has read them ad nauseum, I would not recommend the books. Very long, very boring for mom but girls love them and demand them over and over again.

I know you don't want to get too into the princess thing but my DD loved the little playsets at the disney store that come with a few characters like these: http://www.disneystore.com/disney-princess-figure-play-set-1/mp/1341303/1000262/ and she also really liked the plush dolls like this: http://www.disneystore.com/rapunzel-plush-doll-21/mp/1340006/1000267/

I like these animator's dolls too http://www.disneystore.com/disney-animators-collection-rapunzel-doll-16/mp/1337684/1000259/

We have this one, too.

IDK if it's an option for you, Catherine, but at the Disney Store Outlets, most plush is BOGO for $1 until after Thanksgiving.

My DD liked the mini princess figures (similar to the ones that PP linked above) a lot when she was 3 and 4 (and still some at 5). She likes to build castles and "set ups" for them out of magnatiles, Legos, blocks. etc. She also had a little horse and carriage that was often part of the play (think we bought that at BJs). She also liked the M&D princess magnetic dress up doll (and the big dress up stickers which had some princesses) if she would be ok with non-Disney princess stuff.
My DD wasn't so much into the dress up stuff either (wanted to be but has some sensory issues), but did really like the accessories like wands, purses, etc. She also likes CDs of the princess songs as well as the songs and story CDs that PPs mentioned. Hope that helps!

Thanks for all the suggestions. She has a tea set, actually one with princess stickers on it my parents got her last year.

She has a bazilion stuffed animals so I'd rather avoid more of that kind of thing. A regular doll is a possibility, though she doesn't play a ton with the one she has all that much.

The Candyland game is a good idea. I wonder if she will think that is a toy.

Pretty sure I can't get away with a book as a toy.

Thank you!
Catherine

ETA figures is a a good idea. I was thinking of something along those lines for her stocking (though not necessarily princess figure) but maybe I should shift that.

Does anyone think this ball hopper would count as a princess toy?

Like the magnetic dress up set. That might do the trick! (And then I could get her superhero figures for her stocking. ;). She is into those too, so it's not just me being anti-princess.)

DD just turned 4 and received this as one of her gifts - http://www.amazon.com/Playmobil-Princess-Carrying-Case-Playset/dp/B003VW59SM - she takes it everywhere and has played with it nonstop for the 4 days she has had it - despite all the other new toys.
