LeapPad Questions (e.g., do you need one if you have an iPad?)

I'm feeling pretty dense when it comes to the Leap Pa. Can someone explain to me how they fit in among iPads and another devices? I have an iPad that the kids can use when we travel

Anyways, the deals are tempting but I should probably understand what I'm buying first ;)
