We're buying gifts for a struggling family this year, the 6 year old girl wants My Little Pony, which is easy but the Mom also put educational toys for the 5 yo boy. I have no clue what to buy, can anyone give me recommendations? I've been really sick lately and my brain is fried, this seems like it should be easy but it's not. I'd appreciate any recommendations. Thank you!

I'd get something Leap Frog or Vtech. Leapfrog has various cute electronic toys that do letters and numbers at various price points.

We've loved this fridge alphabet/word builder http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0002SC7CE/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?qid=1386291780&sr=8-3&pi=SX200
DS is 4.5 and we're prepping for Kindergarten.

5 is tough because that's when they need to learn to write letters. But once they learn, those toys aren't that fun anymore.
Having said that, maybe that's ok, because it would be HIS toy vs. something to share with his six year old sister?
My daughter loves this one: http://www.amazon.com/VTech-Write-Learn-Touch-Tablet/dp/B004MWN3SS/ref=zg_bs_1243732011_43

They also need to know what letters look like and the sounds they make. :) Just biased because my just 6yo and his friends love playing with our Leapfrog Word Whammer on the fridge. :)

Thank you for the suggestions so far!

The paper said they both need educational toys, so I was thinking maybe 2 different ones that they could share?

I would try for a board game for the 5 yo; games like Uno (number recognition, color matching), Zingo, Monopoly Jr., and even Dominos can be lots of fun and educational! How about a letter or numbers puzzle? A few Magic School Bus books?
