DS, who will be 4 in February, loves construction vehicles. We have gotten him several toy ones over the past few months. He often asks me what each one is called, and I have no idea. I need a book that would be age appropriate for him that would help us both learn the names of the different types of vehicles. Would love to hear which ones have been a hit at your house.

DS loves these:

When I looked these up just now I saw lots of other ones by Roger Priddy. All of our books by him have been a hit so far.

Be warned I had to learn the names too and now I get in trouble when I use the wrong name!

I think the priddy books are too young for a 4 year old.

A year at a construction site
There are also a bunch of Tonka books. I got a package with about 6 of them for less than $10 from scholastic.

There is a non-fiction series called "Mighty Machines" that has many truck titles that give a lot of info on various kinds of trucks. There is also at least one National Geographic Kids books about trucks.

My son really likes construction and truck books too and he likes these non-fiction books as well as many of the ones mentioned above by PP (esp. Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site, B is for Bulldozer, the Tonka series).

This one has nice illustrations:

The bulldozer on one of the pages is an illustration of my FIL on one of our machines. The illustrator took pictures of one of our job sites years ago!

We own an excavation company and my boys have always known the correct name for all the machines ;) It kills them when an bulldozer is called a loader or vice versa! There are regional differences in what machines are called (excavator vs. digger) but at least get the category right! lol Also, a lot of the DK Publishing books use British nomenclature, fwiw.
