I am trying to make Chalkboard coasters for Christmas Presents. I followed a blog I found online and bought ceramic tiles from Lowes ($.16 a piece) and Martha Steward Chalkboard Paint at Michaels. The tiles have a shiny smooth finish. I've been painting the tiles with the paint and most of the time the paint dries and has a wrinkled/crinkled finish. Like the paint has cracks in it. Its awful. What am I doing wrong? Should I try spray paint chalkboard paint instead? Should I prime the tiles first? I'm also wondering if maybe we put too thick of a layer of paint on the tiles.

Any ideas?

I'm guessing, but with a slick surface like a tile, I would think the paint isn't adhering properly. Maybe a primer?

Or maybe try sanding the surface of the tile with fine sandpaper to give the paint something to adhere to?

You might want to try rustoleum chalkboard paint. A professional artist who loves all other crafty things made by Martha said she much prefers the rustoleum.
