He doesn't need any legos or electronic toys.

Any cool toy that you all have loved? Board games, toys, craft ideas welcome

Perplexus?

I guess a remote control helicopter counts as electronic, but that was a HUGE hit with my nephew.

My own kids want an RC plane too. what one did you wind up getting? i was concerned they were for indoor use - all I could imagine was a scraped up ceiling and a broken plane.

Labyrinth game, Mindware Contraptions, Origami Yoda books, Rainbow Loom, nice chess set, Odyssey or Muse magazines, Ticket to Ride game, RC helicopter. These are some of my soon-to-be 10 year old son's favorite or coveted things.

It was a Syma helicopter. I'm not sure which one. The irritating part was that it could only fly for about 15 min. before needing to recharge. You do need to be a bit careful with it, but my 4 year old could control it, so unless you're purposely trying to crash, it shouldn't break. They're not expensive, either. I think I paid $20 for the one I bought.

My 11 year old likes hex bugs, MindWare contraptions, and he's been asking for a K'Nex roller coaster so I got him one of those this year. I also got him a small KRE-O transformers set, though that may be too "Lego-like."

Ds is ten. All he wants for Christmas are two very expensive baseball bats. Santa is bringing one of them. He's getting books, a pin art desk toy (he loved the one at my BILs house when we visited over Thanksgiving), and a binder and inserts to organize baseball cards. His most used toy still is unit blocks (we are on six years of constant use for those) which he uses along with magna tiles and other random objects to build baseball stadiums, television show sets, etc. He uses various miniture baseball helmets and foot ball helmets and plastic figures to populate those things.

I hear the rainbow loom is popular with boys too. Mine is disinterested, but I know the neighbor's nine year old boy is making bracelets.

The other thing ds always ends up using is nice bound sketch books. He doesn't like the spiral ones as much. He fills them with lists and drawings. He doesn't seem to care much about the pencils or markers or oil pastels though he has access to all of those. He usually ends up using flair tip pens and seems to like having a color choice on those.

Catherine

ETA. Oh I forgot, he's getting a Cardinals baseball jersey from my parents because he wanted one. He already has a Giants jersey. He'd love to own a billion of those, but they are expensive so they are special presents. He already has a bunch of Giants tshirts which he loves and they are his first choice of clothing.

Also, he likes his Sports Illustrated Kids magazine subscription.

Origami is a hit here and there are some cool books for general items (http://www.amazon.com/Origami-Action-Paper-Gobble-Inflate/dp/0312156189/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1387301778&sr=8-10&keywords=origami+book+for+kids) or specific themes like Star Wars (http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=star+wars+origami+books&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=32554705831&hvpos=1t2&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1754960620476826111&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_23xr9p4ysm_b).
An experience gift? Lessons in a sport or activity, tickets to a performance, day at the amusement/water park, etc.

Another vote for Perplexus.

My 9 1/2-year- old boy is getting a Spirograph. He still likes Hot Wheels-type stuff.

Science gear? DS already has a microscope set or that would be on his list.

My almost 10 yo likes electronics and Legos, so that makes it tougher ;)

He is getting a nice ($$$) R/C car. Last year he got lego mindstorms (both legos and electronics, but definitely educational). He likes electronics kits like the Velleman kits, and got a starter electronics/soldering kit last year from Radio Shack for Christmas. (eta: buttercup here on the BBB showed me these and I think they are awesome for 10 yo boys: http://myatoms.com/ I'm getting him some Disney Imagineering DVDs (various science themes. Here's one but there are many others) http://www.amazon.com/Science-Disney-Imagineering-Newtons-Interactive/dp/B002IGPBUS/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1387327426&sr=8-6&keywords=imagineering+dvd . My parents are giving him over ear headphones (like the Dre ones but less expensive). He'll get some books. I have a Star Wars tee for him. We got a deal on amazon for classic clue (family gift).

DD just got a perplexus for her bday that I've had stashed for about a year. Both kids love it.

He got a nice Celestron telescope last year for his bday. This year DH is adding onto it for him with some different accessories.

eta: bounceback or other sports equipment? Basketball hoop? Lessons?

The game Risk or Monopoly (could be a specialty version of Monopoly--there are tons) or a Barnes and Noble gift card. How about a chess set and a book about strategies?

My DS (10) also really likes Legos and electronics, but this year, in addition to the Atoms linked above, he is geting Anki drive (DH is more excited about this one), an archery set, a zipline, and a lego set from the superheros line.

my boys (10, 8, 6) are electronics and legos kids too, but i'm trying to think outside of the box for this yrs gifts.

i just bought Munchkin game and am eager to try and play it with them, looks like fun.

i also suggest the Origami Yoda books, VERY popular for the 10yo and his friends.

my boys have way out grown hot wheels, hex bugs (though i did get the shark ones for stockings), and some other previous suggestions.

i say movie ticket gift card. my boys really want to see a ton of movies during break, so i have suggested that for other little gifts from family members.

Is the origami yoda book too hard for your 10 year old? I read reviews saying it is a bit advanced but the origami for beginners seems to easy.

**OOPS** I literally meant the star wars origami books

ds1 got that SW origami book last yr...it has sat untouched other than when i've done it, i tried to make princess leia and totally screwed her up. the book is pretty neat though. i think he made one character and found it challenging, but not too difficult. the pages are preprinted with the design for the character you are doing. he's better at the origami yoda characters and instructions, and those found in beginners books. still a very pretty book though lol.

OP, my two 10-yo boys are heavily into Legos and electronics, but they also love:

For board games: Battleship, Sorry, Monopoly
Keva planks (a gift from many years ago, but they still love and play with all the time)
RC helicopters (they asked for one of the Syma helicopters for their birthday); they like anything RC
Books like the Guinness Book of World Records and Ripley's Believe It or Not

They both would like the Razor Powerwing scooter; a friend has one and they adore using his.

One of my guys today said he'd like a Kindle . . .

I got this one (http://www.amazon.com/Stopmotion-Explosion-Animate-Anything-Movies-/dp/0983331103/) based on Amazon reviews - it just came today and I'm not as thrilled with it as the reviewers. :( I think it has some good info, and lots of Lego animation ideas, but it's not as kid friendly as I thought it would be and not as much on claymation as I thought. The other one I was looking at was this one (http://www.amazon.com/The-Klutz-Book-Animation-Motion/dp/1591747333/) from Klutz but it's not in print and the prices are jacked up. I'm going to keep my eye out for it used and also go through some other ones at the library.

Almost 11yo DS is really into Rainbow Loom. I LOVE this little thing bc DS and DD1 work on them together, watching the videos. They have even showed DD2 a few patterns. It is a RARE moment at this stage of constant bickering - they actually LIKE working together and have patience for each other! This little LOOM has brought harmony to my family!!! Sooooooo worth the bazillion little bands scattered here and there (still have no idea as they are only allowed to use this in my kitchen!) and the endless collection of bracelets on my wrist. Anyway...Love the thing!! They also go to a Rainbow Loom Club together.

Is there a winter/spring science camp through a museum? DS would be all over that! He loves chemistry.

Gift cards for movie theatre (for special kid/parent day of his choice), Target, or Gamestop. My DS LOVES gift cards.

DS is ASKING for a Nintendo 3DS with some Pokemon games and Epic Mickey and Minecraft for the computer (sadly, the kid laptop just died). He is getting a surfboard, a football, and 2014 Guinness Book of World Records instead. ;) Oh...and I believe he is the last kid on the planet who has had to wait for "Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck". He has practically read the entire book during various visits to Costco. :)
