I know you're not supposed to buy a used crib mattress but can you use it again?

My DS is 2.5 and still in his crib...showing no particular signs of being ready to move. DD is set to arrive in May, probably will be in the bassinet for a few months and after that if we're still not ready we can use the pack n' play. Alternately, I could buy an Ikea crib and mattress when we move her to her own room. I like that option because it looks cuter, but DH doesn't see the point in having 2 cribs. But if there is some reason we may need to buy another mattress anyway, then???

I did get a new mattress for baby #2, I will do anything to lower the SIDS risk. Of course that means I have an old crib mattress languishing in my basement.

I did. DD1 was still sleeping in her crib and I didn't want to move her when a new baby was on the way. So I bought a second crib and a second mattress. I gave DD1's crib to MIL to keep at her house when DD1 moved to a big girl bed.

I didn't and we just retired it in December after 6.5 years of use. It was of good quality and didn't show any signs of wear or sagging. DD1 used it for 2yrs and then DD2 for 4.

I'm using same crib mattress for DS2 when we're ready to move him into his crib few months from now. We moved DS1 to his full size bed from original crib so had to buy a full size mattress for him , freeing up crib mattress for DS2 now.

I also used (and am currently using) the same mattress with DS2 as I did with DS1. I hadn't given it a second thought (until right now). We kept DS2 in the pack n play until DS1 was ready to move out of the crib, which was DS2 was around 5 months old and DS1 was 2yrs 8 months.

I did. As another said, i would do whatever i could to resuce risk of SIDS and new mattress was a small price to pay.

My kids are far apart in age. But I would have gotten new anyway. It's one of those things where I'd rather pay $100 just to not worry about the issue. We bought an IKEA mattress second go around and are very happy with it and actually paid under a $100.

I bought a new mattress but only because DS1 was still sleeping in his crib and using his mattress.

We did not buy a new mattress, although we also haven't put DD2 in her crib full-time yet. I talked to my pediatrician about it, and he didn't feel like the research on reusing mattresses was particularly compelling, which was honestly my feeling as well. As long as your mattress is still firm, clean (no rips, tears, or persistent stains), I would consider reusing it. If you have any concerns about your mattress condition though, I would not hesitate to buy a new one.
