Nathan finished Lincoln's Last Days by Bill O'Riley last month. My mom got it for him for Christmas and he loved it Now they were doing the Civil War in school but he really liked the book http://www.amazon.com/Lincolns-Last-Days-Shocking-Assassination/dp/0805096752/ref=pd_sim_b_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=1ZEXZ6EYR3HGHQZJVW6X

My 4th grader also liked the Lincoln's Last Days and he loves No Picnic on Mt. Kenya about British prisoners in Africa in WWII. Technically, an adult book but my guy is an advanced reader and understands it. He also loved Boys in the Boat about our hometown crew team beating Hitler in the Olympics. We read it to him at bed and then he kept reading and reading and loved it.

Anne Frank might be good.
A more modern day version of this would be Zlata's Diary, about an 11 year old girl living during the 1990s in Sarajevo.

I'd also see what they might recommend on the YALSA website or at your library (teen section).

Depends on her maturity/interest, but I thought that "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand was one of the best non-fiction books I've ever read. It's about a WWII survivor and the story is almost unbelievable because this man just lived an unreal life (from Olympic athlete to POW). It's intense, but very interesting.

I second "Unbroken".

I think it was Other Side of the Mountain I read around that age about a skier. I also remember Joni and reading Helen Keller stories.

So funny--my 12-year-old came home today saying he needed a non-fiction book, too! I will be following this thread with interest.

Wow! I had totally forgotten about Joni. I remember seeing the movie!

And, as soon as I saw the cover for "Other Side of the Mountain", I remembered this book!

Thanks!!

Great websites!!!

I put several books on hold from these websites.

I think the book about P.T. Barnum sounds interesting as well as the Janis Joplin book!!

These were popular in our house (depending on your daughter's interest):
Mayflower- this is a YA adaptation of Philbrick's adult book:
http://www.amazon.com/Mayflower-Pilgrims-New-World/dp/0142414581/ref=la_B000AQW3A4_1_10?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1393334395&sr=1-10

Nazi Hunter- about the capture of Eichmann in Buenos Aires:
http://www.amazon.com/Nazi-Hunters-Survivors-Captured-Notorious/dp/0545430992/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1393334468&sr=1-1&keywords=nazi+hunter

Anything that Steve Sheinkin does is brilliant.

It wasn't sold as YA, but I think a 12-year-old advanced reader could handle the Stacy Cordrey bio of Juliette Gordon Low:

Juliette Gordon Low: The Remarkable Founder of the Girl Scouts (http://www.amazon.com/Juliette-Gordon-Low-Remarkable-Founder/dp/B00AZ91D98/ref=la_B001H6L8HU_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1393338207&sr=1-2)

I'm also trying to think about books I was interested in at 12 ... I had an interest in the Civil War at that time, as well as hagiographies of the "Incorruptibles."

Next month my son's 6th grade class will read "Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story". I was somewhat surprised to hear this but understood once I read a synopsis. I've requested a copy from our library so I can read along with him.

Charlie liked "The President Has Been Shot!" about JFK.
