I'm making DS1's birthday cake. I'm doing this: http://sugarboosweets.blogspot.com/2011/05/happy-10th-birthday-justice.html

I have the numbers cut. But, I'm trying to put frosting on and it's not sticking to the cake. It's rolling off as I'm trying to spread it. this is on the sides. Any ideas? I'm using Sam's Club buttercream icing.

Thanks.

Dip the spatula or knife in warm water then try to do it.

Is your cake still warm?

First, do a crumb layer. Just put a very, very thin layer of frosting over the sides, it will look crumbly.
Step away from the cake, let the layer stiffen, maybe 30 minutes.
Frost with a heavy layer over the crumb layer. It should stick without a problem.

I'll give that a try, thanks.

Nope. Well cooled for a number of hours.

This is the crumb coat that I'm trying to do. It's rolling off as I spread it. Beth's idea makes me think I need to thin the icing for this layer. I've never done that, but don't usually have cut edges either.

I would definitely try thinning it way down. That's a cool cake!

Thin it. It's probably too dry.

Thinning it worked! It went on, I let it sit and did the number zero. It's going well now. Thanks for the ideas!
