Help id this book please

A while back someone recommended a children's book on here that *I* read and loved. It was about some kids in a school. There is a new English teacher who encourages them to write (poetry maybe?). The kids all have backstories, some of which are quite sad. I remember that one girl's mom died (or is dying) of cancer.
I can't remember anything else and it is driving me crazy. I think the title had 'words' in it...

Yes! Thanks so much Angie! That is it. It is a really powerful book. I did not realize that she had also written Sarah, Plain and Tall.
