View Full Version : P&PTs for my mom

apparently mom has had elevated white blood count for weeks now, swollen lymph nodes and her WBC has just gotten even higher. She will be seeing the oncologist but it doesn't sound like it will be as quick as I would like. she seems resigned that it is either leukemia or lymphona....I am trying to be positive but what else could it be? I am really worried. Prayers for quick news and the best possible outcome would be appreciated. thanks!

No experience here, but hopefully this is not as bad as it sounds right now. I know it's hard not to be scared, but I will definitely keep you and your mom in my thoughts and prayers....particularly prayers for peace and good news.

Positive thoughts coming your mom's way. Both of those things are scary but very, very treatable. My friend even had a baby after successfully beating lymphoma.

thank you all! she saw her GP today and they scheduled removal of her lymph node for biopsy. They said her WBC was so high she should be hospitaized and since she was feeling fine that was obviously a bad sign. waiting for the procedure to be scheduled, hoping it is soon.

thanks for all the prayers! I wasn't able to talk too long to my dad but the doctor confirmed today that it is leukemia. They are going to do a CT scan to determine what type on thursday. I guess they are optimistic that it is chronic which is preferable. My parents seem to be taking it in stride and not surprised. I haven't done any research yet so I am not sure that I know what to think at this point.

I'm sorry, Melaine. Chronic is definitely preferable (if there is such a thing) to acute. I'll be thinking of all you.

Is it CLL? Chronic lymphocytic leukemia? I know people who have lived with it for many, many years. Often it is highly manageable. I certainly hope that will be the case with your mom!

:yeahthat: my MIL has CLL..was diagnosed in 2006..so it's been 8 years so far. She does have various health issues (not all related to CLL..she has RA as well) and seems to be doing relstively ok. It was really scary though at first when she was diagnosed, just hearing the word leukemia. Hugs to you and your family.

thanks! that is encouraging! I guess they will use the CT scan to decide if it is CLL....that sounds like the best outcome to hope for.

Diagnosis is done from blood work and special analysis of blood and sometimes bone marrow. (Well, that's how it was 7 years ago when I was doing the testing). Sometimes different DNA markers determine the most appropriate treatment. Some cancers respond differently to different treatments, and some leukemias are controlled through oral meds. Many, many prayers for you and your family.

I don't know about other lymphomas, but I do know that CLL can be a condition you live with for many years. I'll continue to pray for you and your mom. I hope that, though this seems like devastating news, 10 years from now it will just be a medical issue your mom has to keep an eye on. Hugs to you!
