My 5th grade DD is 5'4" and 110 pounds. She needs an outfit for her 5th grade graduation in 2 weeks. She is now exclusively wearing leggings with longer t-shirts, or shorts with t-shirts. She needs a dressier outfit, preferably a skirt or dress. She used to wear dresses all the time, but is going through a sporty phase. She hates things that are too tight, especially since she has been developing. I have shown her many, many options in the store and online and she has rejected everything. She is driving me crazy! I really miss the days when I could bring home Gymboree and she would be happy and look cute. I have been super frustrated with the junior sections of dept. stores. She is very modest, and does not want anything that will show her bra straps. That seems to be the look these days! Should I try petite sections of stores? She is long waisted so I'm not sure that would work. Any suggestions welcome, thanks!

Maybe something like these:

(1) Lily Lace Dress

(2) Vintage Dress

http://www.bodenusa.com/en-US/Girls-9-16yrs-Dresses/93091/Girls-9-16yrs-Vintage-Dress

(3) THE Dress

http://www.bodenusa.com/en-US/Girls-9-16yrs-Dresses/93095/Girls-9-16yrs-The-Dress

(4) Jersey Dress

(5) Jersey Dress

Lots of price-points and all should cover a bra strap just fine.

My 5th grader (admittedly smaller than your DD) has the Lily Lace dress that lizzywednesday posted above, and the JohnnyB Anna dress and they are both lovely... age appropriate, not too short, etc. The Anna dress is a very light cotton twill so less clingy in the bodice though it definitely needs ironing (which I hate to do) but it is actually more striking on my DD than the Lily Lace dress.

This dress is similar to the Lily Lace dress but cap sleeved and a bit less fitted but looks as if it might be a bit shorter

My friend just bought her 13 y/o this dress from Anthropologie... it has a cutout at the back but she said they had no issues with the bra showing. I think her daughter is about the same size as yours and they did not get a petite as it was perfectly just above the knee in the regular.

Skip the petite section, just go straight to your grandma's closet....at 5"4" she can wear regular size clothes anyway.

I'd go with a simple tank dress (maybe with wider straps), like at Old Navy, and add a shrug maybe?

Since she may not wear it again, I'd keep the price down, so Old Navy might work, those Boden dresses are cute but way out of my price range for that type of occasion.

There is this cute eyelet shift dress at Old Navy for $18 (!) if she can fit in an XXL though I suspect you may have already pored through Old Navy and Gap...

Also, I'm always surprised at the variety of dresses that Loft has and the sizes go down to 0 or 2. The price point is higher but they are having a 40% off sale right now.
Here's one that is a bit less fitted but still age appropriate:

Thank you so much for the suggestions! I love the Lily Lace dress. She is liking solids, so I like that it is a single color but the lace gives it a little more interest. And she loves dark blue, and navy is one of the school colors. I've never ordered from Boden. Are the sizes true to the measurements?

We tried all our usual stores, like Old Navy, Target, Kohl's. I have never been much of a shopper for clothes, and my DD hates shopping. I guess we are not typical girls! I think she will be really happy that she is wearing a dress when she sees that all the other girls are. I can't believe it but at least half of her class wears makeup already!

I think part of the issue is that she is just not used to her new body yet. She has grown and changed so much lately. I will get a shrug to go with the dress so she feels like she has some coverage in case she gets self conscious about her arms. Thanks again!

I think the Lily dress is true to size/ measurements. The lining is stretchy so it is a bit more fitted but the lace texture keeps it from being "clingy" and would help to hide straps, etc.
I would call Boden to check on delivery time... they take a bit of time to ship, especially if coming from England (though our Lily dress shipped from the US).

It's a bit spend but when it's so hard to find something you like/ DD can agree on, I start to feel desperate! And my DD has worn hers twice already (recital and DS's First Communion).
