I will be at two outdoor camps with my son this summer. (they are both scout related incase you are wondering). I can not find any shorts that I like. I have not worn shorts in two years. I am a size 6 or 8 depending on who make it. The problem is that most of my weight is in my but and thighs. So shorts tend to do this strange thing around the crotch area, too tight in thighs, etc. If you have an recs on wear to get shorts, please let me know. i just ordered several styles from zappos and only one is kindof okay. I don't want to wear okay shorts, I want to like the way I look in them.

Thanks for any help!!!!

How about a skort? That way if it bunches up around the crotch, no one can tell. That's one of the reasons I like to wear them!

You may need to go longer on the shorts to avoid the looks you are talking about. I am short and I tend to go shorter to accommodate. I actually like Old Navy and NY & co shorts. I am not spending a ton on shorts as I don't wear them that often, really only weekends and vacations.

I second the Athleta skort rec. You might also try just putting bike shorts under a regular Old Navy foldover or cotton skirt. I don't love the look of shorts on me so I do this a lot when I know I'll be chasing kids but still want to wear a skirt.

It may sound strange but Eddie Bauer of all places seems to be getting into the cute skort business. I saw a few in a store window last year and was intrigued but was herding my kids so I didn't get to try them on. http://www.eddiebauer.com/browse/skirts---skorts/dresses---skirts/women/_/N-2790?tab=women The Horizon and Journey skort both look promising.

I carry most of my weight in my butt/thighs. I just bought 3 pairs of shorts that fit great. A pair of khakis from the Gap and two pairs from Macy's--a pair of jean shorts by Jessica Simpson and a cheap pair from Style & Co.

Here's a link to the Jessica Simpson ones: http://m.macys.com/shop/product/jessica-simpson-lively-denim-bermuda-shorts?ID=1257418&CategoryID=28589#fn=sp%3D1%26spc%3D30%26kws%3Djess ica%20simpson%20shorts%26slotId%3D14

Just got the sweet sport skirt from athleta and it's awesome! Not too short! And I got 2 cute pairs of Bermudas (not super long) at kohls. They have a knit waistband so they don't gap at the waist for a pear shape. Sonoma brand.

Same size and weight distribution. I have shorts from Loft, Gap, Limited and Target. Typically 5" shorts and some 4". I size up one size a lot of times to make the fit that area more flattering, especially for white denim shorts. Yes, waist is a little looser, but not hanging off of me. If you find a style you like but aren't crazy about the thigh and crotch area, try on the next size up and see how it feels. Not in loft though as there sizes seem very generous. That said, I do think skorts and skirts are more flattering on me.

I tried on a million shorts last year and ended up with some Liz Clairborne from JC Penney that have worked really well.

Try Gap outlet if you have one nearby. I always find Bermuda shorts there. I've never found shorts that work at regular Gap though. In years past I have always gotten several pair at Old Navy but I haven't found any this year. I just got some Nike shorts at Academy that I really like and I never like athletic shorts because they make my thighs look big. These were the 7" shorts so they hit right above the knee. I also have luck at Target sometimes.

I am also on the hunt for good, comfortable shorts that fit/stay where they're supposed to. 5 months post partum and still have a lot of extra weight below the waist, doing a cross country move this summer including 5 days in Yellowstone with the kids, so I need some comfy shorts! I was going to check out Athleta, but I also found these that get good reviews:

Not very dressy, and I guess they might violate the rule of "no yoga pants unless you're working out," for those who have that rule (I am NOT one of those people!). But I'm at the point where, if they fit, cover the parts of me that need covering, and are comfortable and not heinously ugly, I'm in!

ETA: OMG, I love these:

I will own a pair. Maybe 3.

I need 5" inseam due to the shape of my thighs. I just got some Caslon shorts from Nordstrom. Really happy with them and loving the Ikat print! Search Clean Front Shorts, I'm having a hard time linking on my phone.

I was having the same issue and a saleswoman at JCrew convinced me to try 4-5 inch inseam shorts vs the longer bermuda styles I was looking at. I was completely surprised that the shorter length looked much better. I also have butt/thigh issues but the shorter ones minimized that more while the longer sort of clung in that area and then tapered in some which really pointed out the thigh area. I find the shorter ones more comfortable too- I was between sizes and sized up so that they aren't tight at all.

Yup, I got the black and white Ikat print and love them! I couldn't see that on the mobile link, so here's the whole one.

oooohhh.. These look so comfy. I avoid shorts due to thunder thighs but these are tempting. I wonder if there is a similar but less expensive option? I carry my weight in my thighs and have a paunch, though it fluctuates constantly depending on how bloated I am!

Bumping bc I bought a good pair at Costco the other day. They are super comfy and flattering. DKNY Jeans, item 412746 (not on their website). They have a button tab on the legs so you can roll them up to be shorter (I wish I could make them even shorter though but the length is fine). If you are on a size bubble, get the smaller size.

I bought these 7" twill shorts from Old Navy last year and have been really happy with them. I'm curvy and carry weight in my butt and thighs. http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=1009253&vid=1&pid=938626052

I have similar issues, but I found some Merona shorts at Target this year, on sale for $12, in a cute grey twill pattern. 5 in inseam and size 6 worked for me!

Of all places, I just found some favorite shorts at Coldwater Creek. They are longer "walking" shorts but they fit great. I'd tried to find a similar fit at better stores, with no luck. I'm an 8-10, bottom heavy, and the 10s work for me.

I also had luck at Loft, again with size 10. I have a denim pair from there in an 8 because they stretch.
