My friend hosted a maxi skirt DIY party. I bought the fabric and then missed the party because I went out of town. (So sad). Anyway, I had the fabric so I found a tutorial (http://www.doityourselfdivas.com/2013/10/diy-maxi-skirt-with-yoga-waist-band.html)and made two skirts yesterday during naptime. SOOOO easy and I have very rudimentary sewing skills. I am happy with the finished product and plan to make some for DDs too. I got my fabric from Girl Charlee. (http://www.girlcharlee.com/knit-fabric-c-90.html) Wanted to share!

Sorry the photo is awful I am trying to figure out how to do selfies with the ipad.

Wow! Good for you. I am very intimidated by sewing but would like to learn.

OOOOH! This is awesome! I have wanted to try and make some maxis, but I needed a tutorial. I've never sewn with knits - is it any harder than with woven fabric?

Oh and how did you pick your fabric? Any guidelines?

Thanks for posting. I just went shopping yesterday to look for some maxi skits - it's so hard to find one that fits since I'm only 5'2". Yeah, I could always just hem it, but to make one myself would be a great option. Skirts are generally easy to make.

I've never sewn with knits, but I've sewn with other stretchy fabrics. It is a bit of a challenge because you have to make sure NOT to stretch the fabric as you are sewing (depending on the fabric, I sometimes have the tendency to pull on the fabric.)

Thanks for the tutorial, OP! Girl Charlee is a great online shop for knit fabrics. I just started sewing with knits (I'm a beginner too) and found that a ballpoint or stretch needle works well. Also, you can use the stretch or zig zag stitches on your machine. If you use zig zag, you'll want to use a short stitch width and length (like 1mm wide by 1.8mm long). The best thing about knits is that the edges don't unravel so no need to finish seams!

Which category did you buy from? I have no idea what all the different knit fabric descriptions mean and how to choose something suitable...

I am not 100% sure how to choose knits. I got this one http://www.girlcharlee.com/green-purple-baroque-squares-cotton-jersey-blend-knit-fabric-p-8126.html and this one http://www.girlcharlee.com/slightly-flawed-red-triangles-on-charcoal-gray-cotton-jersey-blend-knit-fabric-p-8839.html

both worked very well and I didn't even have the right needle. I used a zigzag stitch. I know some is SO stretchy it is really hard to work with.
