View Full Version : Favorite reasonably priced (less than $150-$200) suit separates?

I have an interview on Wednesday with another state agency (my first in over 11 yrs.) and since my work is business casual and I have very few needs for a full business suit (I will wear wrap dresses or a shell with pants or a skirt to funerals, church, and the office) so now I at least need a jacket. I am thinking of Talbots as I already have a basic black wool skirt from Talbots, plus a gift card from Christmas. I did order some separates from the Nordstrom sale and they didn't fit well at all and I doubt they will have much more in my budget and honestly I am not to happy with the quality of INC pants I got at Macy's a few months back so I am kind of stuck. We do have some nice JC Penneys near me as well so I will probably look there as well. Any thoughts?

Nordstrom I got Hugo Boss suit and really like it. Also got one from J Crew and it was also great.

I think we left little to discuss after Lizzy's thread on business separates.

Thanks for the rec. Hillview, I will check those out as well, the mall I went to didn't have a J Crew and I didn't really want to peruse Nordstrom because it was a zoo due to the last day of the sale.

I ended up getting this black jacket at Talbots for $60 (http://www.talbots.com/online/browse/product_details.jsp?id=prdi32100&mode=search&catId=&rootCategory=&trail=&addFacet=SRCH:seasonless&viewAll=&conceptIdUnderSale=&prdi32100_selectedColor=0057&prdi32100_userAction=colorSwapSelection&section=Sale&prdi32100_colorIndicator=saleColor&backurl=%2Fonline%2Fsearch%2FsearchResults.jsp%3Fq uestion%3Dseasonless%26trail%3D%26pageNum%3D0%26ad dFacet%3DSRCH%253Aseasonless%26removeFacet%3D) which matches the black skirt (and is the same material) that I bought there last summer, and this button down shirt (http://www.talbots.com/online/browse/product_details.jsp?zoomImage=42075102_7291&id=prdi33234&rootCategory=cat70008&catId=cat80006&sortKey=Default&section=Regular&conceptIdUnderSale=cat70008&rootConcept=Misses). I might not wear the shirt though because it has been really humid here so I will most likely just wear a cap sleeve silk shell (white top with a small black print).

I picked up two pairs of signature fit trousers from Ann Taylor as well, one pair in a medium grey, and the other in black the grey was on sale and the black wasn't, but I have had good luck with them in the past and know they fit well so I splurged a bit on them, they were $84 vs. the grey ones that were $39. I did check out some pants at JC Penney, but they didn't fit very well, either too tight or a little too big, but I will definitely keep them in mind and the quality seemed pretty good for the price.

I also picked up or had to order these items other items from Talbots:
Polynesian floral dress (http://www.talbots.com/online/browse/product_details.jsp?id=prdi32987&rootCategory=cat90030&catId=cat80018&sortKey=Default&section=Sale&conceptIdUnderSale=cat90030)
Circle and Square dress (http://www.talbots.com/online/browse/product_details.jsp?id=prdi32598&rootCategory=cat90030&catId=cat80018&sortKey=Default&section=Sale&conceptIdUnderSale=cat90030)
black short zip jacket (http://www.talbots.com/online/browse/product_details.jsp?rootCategory=cat70008&id=prdi32440)

potential dresses for my brother's wedding in October:
black/white dress (http://www.talbots.com/online/browse/product_details.jsp?id=prdi32910&rootCategory=cat90030&catId=cat80018&sortKey=Default&section=Sale&conceptIdUnderSale=cat90030)
rose dress (http://www.talbots.com/online/browse/product_details.jsp?id=prdi32598&rootCategory=cat90030&catId=cat80018&sortKey=Default&section=Sale&conceptIdUnderSale=cat90030)

I vote for the Black and White dress for your brother's wedding. Congrats on finding the suit pieces that you wanted, and good luck on the interview!

*giggle*

I found two complete suits between Macy's and Lord & Taylor; I wore the 2nd today at my 2nd interview.

They are Jones NY, which I like for its structural details, but I'm not sure if you're as much of a structure snob as I am.

I bought a really nice pair of lightweight wool suit pants and blazer from Banana Republic with their 50% off sale last week. I had a bunch of Gap rewards I applied to it, which brought the entire suit down to a little over $100 out of pocket. Sounds like you found something that works for you! Good luck with the interview!

I've had good luck at Ann Taylor. Locally, the women at their store are the most helpful which is nice. Oddly, our Talbots never seems to have coordinating separates in store. So strange.
