My very good friend is getting married in early October - black tie! Woooooo I happen to be making the cake as well, and it is about an hour away so considering all that plus the work week leading up to it I'd like to be a comfy/cozy as I can. I read about Rent the Runway from miss Annie and since I'm in no mood to lay hundreds down for a dress I thought it would be a good option.

The first is so up my alley it's crazy

https://www.renttherunway.com/shop/designers/slatewillow_dresses/quinnglitterdress

And the second is different but good too (my coloring is just like the model)

https://www.renttherunway.com/shop/designers/mlmoniquelhuillier_dresses/isabelladress

I'm nervous that I'm too tall though at 5'9" but I have the option to make an appointment at their showroom to try on too....

TIA! :)

I'd try them on first. Can't wait to see what you decide!

I don't think the 2nd one is dressy enough. I'd probably for sleeveless for evening black tie. I'm guessing you are too tall for option 1. :)

I'm with SnuggleBuggles. I think that option 1 is going to be waaaay too short on you. It's nice that you can try them on.

I think I'd keep searching, though.

I really like option 1. Not a fan of option 2 and I agree you are too tall for such a short dress if you are going for dressy.

Neither one seems black tie appropriate to me.

I tend to agree. Those seem more like cocktail dresses to me. Maybe look for something a little sleeker that doesn't scream holiday party?

I'm your height, and that's a lot of leg for a black tie affair, especially a wedding IMHO. The rear view of that black dress looks like it barely covers her bum! It reads more club opening/record launch/gallery opening than black tie wedding.

I just looked at the customer photos for the first dress and it really doesn't read black tie in those pics.

I think I'd go with a more sophisticated, subdued look for a black tie wedding in the NYC area. I like these:

I went to a black tie wedding in NYC two summers ago. Please read this as nicely as possible - but neither of those dresses would have been appropriate. There was a mix of short and long (maybe 2/3 short), so it's not that...just *how* short. The ones that Green_Tea posted would have all been appropriate there. I wore the 'two years ago version' of this in black, and felt very appropriately dressed. http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/adrianna-papell-shutter-pleat-jersey-sheath-dress/3805277?origin=PredictiveSearch-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=2375500&fashionColor=&resultback=7049&cm_sp=personalizedsort-_-searchresults-_-1_20_D

Have fun!

I agree with others that both of those dresses strike me as too casual for a black tie wedding. I'd also be worried about the length - I'm 5'8" and I don't think I would feel comfortable in those hemlines.

The second one that Green Tea linked to has a similar style to the ones you chose, but I think it would work better for a black tie event.

How about this...it's rent the runway, people said they wore it to black tie wedding and said it was comfortable. It has the lace overlay and similar styling. I'd take 2 pairs of shoes - 1 flats for when busy with the cake, then heels for when work is done so you can party.

Though lace may not be a good choice as it catches on things. Maybe something like this then https://www.renttherunway.com/shop/designers/carmenmarcvalvo_dresses/sweetcanbedress

I love the colors in this one https://www.renttherunway.com/shop/designers/adriannapapell_dresses/gardeniadress

hey ladies! (every time I type that I hear the Beasties in my head - anyone else?!)

So I am snickering to myself because as I've been thinking about the dresses it's been sinking in that I'm older now and those are clearly party dresses for the party girl in my head :innocent: not to even mention the obscene lengths :bag As much as I've known my way around a black tie party for decades I haven't been to one (and yes, the last was another good friend's wedding too - over five years ago! what?!) at this age! I need to be more grown up and frankly I hate a too short skirt. Ick. But I also do not want to go strapless or sleeveless as a) it's not comfy for me and b) it's inside/outside mansion in the country wedding so I'd rather be warm.

This was the only other one that I could see being "me"....Between my mom, sis and I we've got the shoes and both real & faux jewelry plus bags to spare....I'm loaning the Bride my own diamond earrings but can borrow goodies from my mom and the family stash for my sis and I. So how about this dress with brown silk pumps, a beaded skinny leopard print clutch and some good earrings? I also have a big faux pearl & diamond collier from J. Crew that could work with the neckline but maybe not the color....

I think my hubby might fall over and we would make a pretty darn handsome pair!

Thanks so much ladies - I appreciate the honesty and I'm glad to know my thoughts were veering toward correct ;) Does anyone else still feel like a kid?

Va va voom, but in a classy way. Love the colour. It'll stand out in sea of black dresses.

The new dress that you posted definitely strikes me as much more black-tie appropriate. Personally I'd skip the necklace and go for some great earrings instead.

I totally agree Cat! Dying to see it in person....wondering if all accessories will need to be minimal. I'm excited to make an appointment - both my mom and hubby think it's a great dress - and who knows what else they've got! :)

I agree. They are pretty, but I think you're going to be way to tall and both are, in my personal opinion, too short for a formal wedding. Sorry! (I love the color of the second one though!)

Sorry, just saw the gold dress you picked....I really like that one!

Yes, the gold dress is much more appropriate! Very pretty and I think a great pair of earrings would be best. Maybe even rent a pair! I often rent their jewelry with my dresses.

Yes, see what earrings they have to rent. They usually have suggestions.
