Just realized I have maybe 5 tops that are nice enough to wear this winter. When I say "tops" I mean long sleeve tees from Nordy/LE. ONE pleoine top from NAS, and one shrunken sweater dress to wear as a tunic.Oh, and one Talbot's sweater from the thrift shop, plus 2 old boden dresses. Everything I have could fit in my luggage.

I need some ideas of fun items to purchase. Something quality and cost wise between Target and HA. Love HA clothing for myself, but can't do those prices right now.

pretty please, share what you think you will wear a lot of this winter. A friend stopped by and toured our house renovations. She was shocked at how few items I have hanging in my closet. What should every girl have?

Bookmarking! My bobeau cardi from the nordstrom sale is all that's on my list. And I have a pretty minimalist closet too - don't let her judge you!

Well, I'm pregnant, so luckily I can't get sucked into the cute fall trends because they wouldn't fit me anyhow, but what I've worn the past couple of autumns is:

1. black tall Hunter rain boots (since I'm shorter I was able to get a pair of the kids' size from Nordstrom for a better price than the adult ones)
2. tan rain/ trench coat from Banana Republic
3. lots of black tops with black bottoms or skinny jeans (I like Guess) and tall black or brown leather boots from Clarks (fit my fussy feet)
4. a leopard-print infinity scarf from Old Navy a couple years ago
5. a couple of tunic-length l/s shirts from LE and LECanvas bought during their great sale a couple years ago (striped navy & white; kind of a rust color with cowl neck)

Knit blazers! I love them and have at least a few. So easy to dress up (the solids) or down (the stripes)
Leggings
Ponte pants (with back pockets) - I feel more comfy in these than leggings for those tunic tops that don't quite cover my butt entirely and they're more comfy than skinny jeans
Boots of course:)
I have a cropped moto knit cardi that I adore

This is the blazer that I have, based on recs from BBB (unfortunately doesn't look like there is much to choose from right now!):

I am so not the person to be giving advice on clothing, but I have been reading YouLookFab and PinterestToldMeTo a lot lately. This fall (if indeed it ever comes to my climate) I plan to wear plaid button ups/flannel shirts (very happy that these are apparently back "in") lots of waterfall type sweaters/cardigans over tanks (these aren't terribly "in" per se, but I have found they are super flattering for me and I have found many while thrifting) denim vests over maxi dresses or skirt/top combos (new look for me and I really like it) plus the classic tunic tops and leggings or long shirts over skinnies (I will always love leggings and tunics and hope they are always acceptably stylish). Boots boots boots as always.

To be honest, I don't have a ton of long sleeve shirts. I tend to wear SS with sweaters or LS dresses over tights/leggings. Not sure why this is, but I think it goes back to my flat chested-ness and the fact that I don't love the shape of many LS shirts on my silhouette. Oh, I did get a long sleeve boho top that I look forward to wearing. Oh and the Barefoot Dreams blardigan, do you have it? loooove it.

ETA: So, to answer the question more succinctly, I am going to say: 1) Jeggings/leggings 2)waterfall cardigan sweater (or blardigan) 3)plaid shirt 4)tunic dress 5)frye boots

If you need any leggings, check the reviews on the Matty M ones available at costco.com and in store at costco. $15 and very nice quality, great reviews on makeupalley's fashion board and on the costco website.

Agree that in your climate a knit blazer would be nice. It could be outerwear for you some days, or at least it would have been for me in NC after growing up in the chilly northeast ;) I snagged a jcrew schoolboy blazer on sale for $60 months ago and am excited to wear that this fall.

I want a few everlane pieces for fall.

I think this is a great start, give or take with your personal style a little (ex. Vests look awful on me; I'd do a great pair of skinny jeans instead.). You should really check out Pinterest Told Me To....she usually has a list of seasonal "must haves" that are very versatile building blocks for your wardrobe.

1. Jeans that fit (my current ones are from The Gap)
2. I love nice long sleeve t shirts, sometimes I have good luck with The Gap, Ann Taylor Loft, and Target. Lands End always looks boxy on me.
3. Boots! (heeled booties, Uggs, cowboy style, low heeled calf height) I mainly wear my jeans over my boots vs. tucked in because I swear boot cut jeans are the only jeans that look great on me, but maybe I will try to find some skinny jeans that look great on me this year! (I am pretty self conscious of my 18" calfs though---these sadly don't get smaller w/weight loss!:()
4. I love a cashmere or wool blend sweater but sadly I don't get to wear them much here because it gets pretty warm.
5. I love my thick cotton Old Navy cardigan (http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=89219&vid=1&pid=978045002) (mine is navy and a few years old! Ordering this for my mom and sister for Xmas...these sell out pretty quickly)

I was also really surprised how much I liked this cardigan from Talbots and it is on my list for when it goes on sale:
Talbots Merino Wool zippered cardigan (http://www.talbots.com/online/browse/product_details.jsp?id=prdi33267&N=4294966578+10501&selectedConcept=Misses)

Another goal of mine is to somewhat include nicer items that I wouldn't wear to work in my wardrobe for parties, church, and maybe a random Junior League meeting/training because I get really tired of wearing my business casual work wear to every darn event I go to.

Blogs are fun for styling tricks, new fall picks and fun to read in general.

I'm trying to limit myself to 5 new things for fall, because... well I have a shopping problem. :)
On my top list are these
http://www.sorel.com/womens-joan-of-arctic-wedge-mid-boot-NL1987.html?dwvar_NL1987_variationColor=028#start= 15
they also come in tan which is amazing if you have blonde hair to bookend your outfits
http://www.sorel.com/womens-joan-of-arctic-wedge-mid-boot-1573381.html?dwvar_1573381_variationColor=216#q=jo an+fossil&start=2

As I recall you are in the midwest, so you know sorel's rock. These are waterproof and have killer traction. VERY comfortable for a wedge and elevate your outfit quick!

I'm also on the hunt for statement earrings, and these might be my next fall splurge
http://www.kendrascott.com/sadie-spear-earrings-in-silver.html
I like the mixed gold and sliver. Most of Kendra Scott earrings look "cheap" to me, but these look luxe and are not heavy for their size.

Tops are a quick update and I like the following. All are flattering on my short, 20lb overweight, and poochy belly
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/pleione-mixed-media-tunic-regular-petite/3736370 (size down 1-2 sizes)

They have a very similar cut at Ann Taylor loft for $60, but in a crazy cool darker chambray color. It's new, and I can't find it on thier website yet.

This is spendy, but cute and very flattering (size up if you're on the edge) but 50% off today!

ETA: Maybe not midwest?!? NC?!? Either way those sorel boots are great for cool snowy days. Remarkable comfortable. Really, really comfy. The wedge is not bad and I can't tolerate heels!

There has been a lot of talk on PTMT lately about this ON vest and it's similarity to this one from JCrew....actually the ON one is still pricey for me but I am watching for restocks and markdowns.

Here's my fall favorites (some of which I already purchased at the Nordstrom anny sale or piperlime- love their updated site btw):

Leather moto jacket- I got this one http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/treasurebond-quilted-leather-moto-jacket/3873503?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=&resultback=2864&cm_sp=personalizedsort-_-searchresults-_-1_9_C

Some Vince sweaters

Equipment silk blouses- I got this one: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/equipment-reese-print-silk-shirt/3740801?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=&resultback=665&cm_sp=personalizedsort-_-searchresults-_-1_2_D

I'm taking a pair or two of my denim skinnies to the tailor to get cropped (or more ankle length) to update them.

A neutral, flat ankle bootie, these in putty suede- http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/sam-edelman-petty-bootie/3212698?origin=PredictiveSearch-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=Putty+Suede&resultback=776&cm_sp=personalizedsort-_-searchresults-_-1_2_B

For date night or girls night out I got these faux leather leggings (which are so flattering and comfortable btw) that I'll pair with a oversized chunky cable knit sweater -

I love the Sam Edelman booties, but they run narrow! I tried a pair today at Nordstrom's, and they seem to run long and narrow. You can order some colors in wide but not all. : (

Anyone have any other bootie recs?

I kinda like this list from The Daily Connoisseur: http://dailyconnoisseur.blogspot.com/2014/09/ten-item-wardrobe-fallwinter-2014.html
I'm having to basically start over with basics after three kids. I'm especially eyeing a denim shirt dress and those ATL fluid ankle pants, though all I've purchased so far are leggings (Boden), sneakers (Converse) and solid tees.

WOW! Great lists!!!

I've been busy shopping consignment sales this month for DC, but one of them has a shop for moms. I actually found a few items in there that will be good additions to my non-existent wardrobe, and it will help me feel justified to spend a bit more on some key items.

1. corduroy ON skirt
2. ON sweater dress (hooded) like this...apparently needs a shirt under it, lol http://www.ebay.com/itm/OLD-NAVY-DARK-GRAY-COTTON-WOOL-BLEND-HOODED-SWEATER-DRESS-NEW-SZ-S-/361054397978?pt=US_CSA_WC_Dresses&hash=item541084e61a
3. a black w/white stripes knit blazer
4. 2 longer chunky sweaters that will go well with the CK ponte pants from Costco
5. navy and gray ponte pants from costco
6. a red H&M shirt like the pleione one - plus the maroon one I already got from Nord. anniv. sale

The fun thing is that all the consignment stuff was $2-4! There was a boden colorblock sweater that was a whole $6, but it was worth the splurge. Half price day rocks!

still on the hunt for that neat herrigbone vest, some scarves, more boots (sorels, I hope to find), more shirt type tunics. I'm a bit disappointed not one of you mentioned the slouch pant from Athleta. Can that please be one of the top 5 in the fall wardrobe? I really want those bettona boyfriend replacements.

I really like those but I have never ordered from Athleta. I buy mostly used so try to recreate the look from Goodwill. I am on a spending freeze right now but I might have to watch those through the season and hope for a deal.
I actually got some harem pants that I loved and would have been on my top 5 list but they wore out ridiculously fast, like after one wash. (Darn kmart...what did I expect?) Anyway, now that I know how much I love that kind of new loose pant, I am definitely hoping to get more.

I'm trying to look more 'polished', both in my casual life and for networking/interviewing events. And I'm almost starting from scratch as well, given the kids and working from home, etc. I have to do almost all my shopping online, but last week was in a town with a Nordstrom and no sales tax on clothes. I only had an hour or so to shop but I went a little nuts, it was so great to actually try things on!

I'm all about lightweight 'toppers' this fall, b/c it's been a hole in my wardrobe for a while, and doubly so since I'm still nursing and can't quite fit into the one or two I have. I used some gift return money and splurged on a moto leather jacket that was on sale, replacing one from 12 years ago that was a serious workhorse in our temperate climate. Given the life of it's predecessor I think I will get my money's worth. I also bought this knit jacket/sweater which I'm loving, even though it *pained* me to not wait for a sale ;)

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/bernardo-four-pocket-leather-jacket-regular-petite/3847476?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=&resultback=677&cm_sp=personalizedsort-_-searchresults-_-1_3_C

When I have more budget I'd like to also get a cute trench/rain coat. I found one I liked but it didn't have a hood and I couldn't really justify it given my other purchases.
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/betsey-johnson-leopard-piped-trench/3752559?recs_type=related&recs_productId=&recs_categoryId=0&recs_productOrder=2&recs_placementId=PP_4&recs_source=Rich_Relevance_Recs_R3&recs_strategy=PurchaseCP

I got this skirt as well and it's already proving to be a great addition:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/halogen-pleat-midi-skirt-regular-petite/3767930?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=Black%2F+Cream+Stripe&resultback=1234&cm_sp=personalizedsort-_-searchresults-_-1_4_D

Shoe wise I bought a couple pairs of flats, and am looking for some booties. It's still nearly 100 here so I'm holding out hoping for a deal in a month or two. I'm still considering the whole skinny jean thing, but I really am having trouble making it work for my body. Maybe when it's colder and I can do tunic sweaters.

Beautiful leather! I have looked at the caslon cardigan linked before and it looks really nice. Do you think you will wear it closed or just open? wondering how you like it on.
