We are doing portraits of our family in a park in first week of November. We live in midatlantic, so it's possible it could be snowing then. We are a family of 4 and I am the official photographer of the home and we have several good pictures of kids and kids and dh. But no good pics of me. I am turning 35 very soon, so it will be like a portrait session for the family but also focussing on getting great shots of me.

I want to have some great pictures of me but not really sure what to wear, where to start? Any ideas? My arms are jiggly and fat so that is definitely not my plus point which I want to show off. I am 5.5 and 140 lbs. any ideas to help me get started?

I think you should think about what you feel best in and go from there. I personally like jeans, boots, sweater, scarf look for myself. I have some seen some great "casual" family portraits but I know some families like a more formal look.

Pick an outfit you like or a look you like and go from there. We are having family photos done in about 2 weeks. My girls are wearing matching (different styles but same print) dresses from Tea, DS is wearing jeans and a navy/white strip pullover from gymboree, DH is wearing jeans and some type of navy, red, or grey sweater with a button down underneath, and I'm wearing skinny jeans, brown boots, and not sure what on top. Look on pinterest for ideas but if the focus is going to be you maybe go to Nordstrom and have the shopper there find you an outfit to start with?

Hijack- nfowife, what dresses are your girls wearing? I'm working on family picture outfits, too, and having a heck of a time.

Witmom, dd1is wearing the bubble bottom drop waist style and dd2 is wearing the crossover style dress. They are both wearing denimish navy leggings or I might do light gray leggings. Not sure. The dresses are hummingbird print: http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/236x/43/78/32/437832664d7e864156daf73d31bb9dd8.jpg

Unless you just really want something formal, I'd go dressy casual but avoid dresses or skirts. I can see wearing dresses for Easter photos, but I think fall photos can be more relaxed and comfortable. I agree that you should choose your outfit first. That's what I do. Then choose what to put the rest of the family in based on that. Stick with limited colors (e.g. all creams, browns, and red or navy, teal, and grey or navy, grey, and orange). It usually works well to have the adults in outfits that are solid and darker with the kids in clothing that has patterns and spots of brighter color.

I am thinking of this look...

http://www.momgenerations.com/2013/09/fashion-pin-of-the-day-boho-chic-for-moms/

Though I am not sure how I will look in that look as my legs are not that thin and shapely. I have always loved that look and wanted it, but never had, so my turning 35 I need to make it.

I have never owned a skinny jeans before so if you can recommend good skinny jeans brands which are not expensive, and good brown riding boots it will be nice.

I own a pair of brown bear paws which are warm and cozy but I would love brown leather boots. Look the look of brown leather riding boots

At 5'5' 140, I can't imagine that your legs wouldn't look good in skinny jeans. :). Don't be hard on yourself. I have several pairs from an assortment of brands. Jeans are very person unique so I'd hit a few stores and try them on. I have a pair I like from the Gap and someone just recommended the Jag Nora pull on ones (Amazon).

If you have the budget, Frye boots will do you right.

Super cute outfit! I am like you ... never owned a pair of skinny jeans and love the look of riding boots (again don't own a pair myself). If I were doing portraits I would try to go with a similar look. I like a brown and navy blue combo or brown and greens for the rest of the family. Good luck!

There's great advice in that link! I also recommend looking at Pinterest. Here are some great Fall family photos with the mom wearing boots and layered tops (so no need to show your arms if that's an area you'd prefer to cover).

OP, you sound like you would look great in everything. Since it is Fall and your self-conscious about your arms, just wear long sleeves. To be a naysayer, I think the women in the pictures looks fantastic, but personally it would be not something I choose, because all the many layers and textures would make me look heavier. (Let's just say I am significantly heavier than the original poster.) I would wear a wrap dress, as the uniform color, top to bottom, looks slenderizing. Overall, I want to keep my look simple, so as not to clash with anyone else. In my family pictures, I expect that I would be wearing this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HANEP9M/ref=twister_B00IIFA1VM

What's the background for the pictures? Is this going to be outside like the pictures posted? If so, I would wear a long coat and jeans, and that should work.

I think the boots will depend on your budget. The Melissa Button boots from Frye are similar, but $$$:

http://www.amazon.com/FRYE-Melissa-Button-Knee-High-Vintage/dp/B002TUVOGS/ref=sr_1_3?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1411986314&sr=1-3&keywords=frye+boots

Something a little more budget-friendly:

http://www.amazon.com/Sam-Edelman-Womens-Penny-Riding/dp/B007FNCPPS/ref=sr_1_7?m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1411986707&sr=1-7

But riding boots can be very personal. Your height, calf size and foot shape make a huge difference in the riding boot you get.

The same with skinny jeans, depending on budget I would head to Gap or Old Navy and try some different styles on.

Here is a similar sweater:

.

I tend to agree. I am almost the exact size as OP (5’5” 135 lbs. slight pear shape) and the heavy textured and boxy sweaters would not look good on me or my arms in pictures for close up shots that cut me off and our favorite from last year is actually close up. Some of that might be specific to us as my husband is a a lot taller than me so photographers tend to do a lot of full body shots where we the parents are sitting, kneeling, etc. I am just not always standing or walking because I tend to look like a little kid next to him.

I do, however, like layers and colors. Last year I wore a fitted v neck with textured cami. This year pictures were made sooner so warmer weather and I wore a cami and a thin cardigan, jeans & boots. (I’ve only seen 2 sample proofs, but the colors looked great).

Also agree with pp that boots and jeans are so person specific. I try on a ton of both before I find one I like and then once you find a brand that flatters you, it is easier. OP, make this fun! Try on lots of things and find an outfit that you love!

6 PM has quite a few Frye and Cole Haan boots on sale, including these Cole Haan Adler boots at over 1/2 off:

We are having family photos done for the first time in 5 years in a couple weeks so I am working on our outfits as well. I tend to prefer something that defines my waist over a boxy look.

i am not a fan of either of the two you linked to above. if i had to pick between them, i'd go color block. but i'm really not a heart person so would simply never pick a sweater that had hearts on it. also, i prefer the fitted style of the color block one over the flair of the heart one. that makes me think maternity almost

I like the fit of the color block, but not the pattern. Too busy for me of not just stripes, but various shades of colors. I would prefer a solid color or subtle pattern fitted top and then if you want to add a print, accent color, or pattern, do it with a scarf, cami, or necklace. I really do not like the shape or pattern of #2 at all.

ETA: Boots: I like the SM, CH and Vince. The Born I like, but not that shade of brown.

We just had our pics taken this weekend. I kind of threw my outfit together in a hurry but liked how it turned out. I wore a red sweater with a form fitting camel colored short sleeve turtleneck with slim 7 for mankind jeans and two tone riding boots in two shades of brown (camel and cognac). The boys and my DH all wore jeans and nice fall sweaters in navy and cream.

:yeahthat: Jeans look good and your knees aren't chubby. The knees and butt are the two areas I check on skinny jeans to see how they fit. The boots don't look great. But you can look at the height and circumference of the ones you have and search for some that are less than that.
