Moving DD into a twin size bed and need a mattress only (no box spring). One of her friends at preschool is moving and the mom wants to get her kids an organic mattress and looking to get rid of the others. She has a twin Sealy Posturepedic Preferred one-sided mattress that she said she would give me for free! She mentioned it has been barely used (her child will turn 4yrs in Dec.). She isn't a close friend, but our kids have had a couple of play dates so she isn't a complete stranger to me. My husband and I are on the fence about getting a "used" mattress for our DD for hygiene reasons, but not sure we are overthinking it. What would you do?

I would prefer not to but if I knew the family I would. I borrow air mattresses from friends for guests. It seems the same to me.

Yes, I would. You can always get one of those hypoallergenic mattress covers also. We have often had use mattresses...it doesn't really bother me.

:yeahthat: as long as it is a non smoking house and she is the only owner

No. I wouldn't want to do that especially if was a toddlers and could have had accidents. I would buy a twin by itself, SAMs Club sells them - even though we are Costco people I've noticed their ads.

No because used mattresses skeeve me out... A twin can be purchased new inexpensively anyway.

That is one of my thoughts/concerns, but I was also thinking that I would have a mattress cover on it and it could get us through the next couple years of "accidents" since she is not night trained yet. we could get her a new one in a couple of years once she is past that stage. I would like to think that the mom offering the used mattress would either disclose it's been soiled or would be too embarrassed to pass along, but it's not something I am comfortable asking.

I would. If it's been souled you will be able to tell, if it looks clean than I wouldn't have any issues. Put a mattress cover over it and you are all set! You can get covers inexpensively at Marshall's/TJMax

Yes, I have. We use the all-encasing mattress covers since DS wet the bed until age 6 (!), so it was not a big deal to me that the mattress was used.
