Anyone made their own Lego advent calendar?

I hate spending $30 on the advent calendars because the kids don't end up with very many Legos for the price. We have a PB Advent calendar I bought last year. I'm thinking about buying each of the kids their own Lego set and separating it myself, has anyone else done this?

I tried buying the small xmas sets Lego puts out each year (a tree, santa skiing) but the sets are too big to put into the cubbies in our advent calendar (Target several years ago). If you were only going to do minifigs or pull the set apart and do a few pieces a day, that would probably work.
