He's 5.

What can I get that's fairly safe but fun?

I saw one at Lakeshore Learning that looked pretty fun and safe. It says 6+, I saw it in person though, and I think a 5 year old would enjoy it. I'm thinking of getting it for DDs.

how about the marshmallow shooting kind?

eta: a couple of reviews said you can also use little pom poms to shoot, instead of marshmallows. my ds age 6 asked for a bow and arrows for christmas and i think im going to go with this one,but will be watching for other ideas.

My kids are getting Nerf ones for Christmas that have a lot of reviews that mention 5/6 year-olds on amazon. We also have one from Bear Archery (we also bought on amazon) that the kids use under supervision (with their dad).

We had this one (minus the target) when DD was obsessed with Brave. It was a little tricky for her at the time (she was just turning 4) but I think a 5 year old would be fine.

Don't get the Nerf one. My kids broke it almost right away.

It says 9+. Do you think a younger kid would be tall/strong enough to shoot it well?

These were on sale for $12 a few days ago. I ordered one for each DC.

You've got to use the Lakeshore Learning one outside, right? Not sure I trust where the arrows would go if it is that realistic.

This is not a "true" bow and arrow, but I would get something like this in the Zing line. It says 8 + so you might want to call the manufacturer to see if a 5 year old could pull it back.

Sorry, just saw this. I don't think so. It doesn't say that anywhere that I saw, and the video shows the target on a plush rug. The ends of the arrows are suction cups, so I'm not sure why it would have to be outside, and even if it went of target, it shouldn't be dangerous.

We had the zing and it was fine for my 6 year old but my 4 year old had trouble with it... So a strong 5 year old might be ok. It did get broken after a few months by a friend- not sure if they were being too rough or not as I didn't see it happen.

Sounds like they all get broken under normal play. That's discouraging!
