DD2 is 7 yo and loves rocks. Two years ago she got a Rick tumbler. Last year she got the "break your own geode" kit and the "mine for gems" kit and loved both. She also got a game called Rock On that was a hit. This year.....what's left lol? Any suggestions?

Does she already have books about different types of rocks? At a museum gift shop I just bought a bag of magnetic rocks as a stocking stuffer.

I went to a few local rock/ gem/ mineral shops in my city and picked up a few very unique rocks for ds one year. The store employees were excited to have a kid that was into rocks and were of great help!

A crystal growing kit? I collected rocks as a kid and loved to grow crystals. :)

She has some books about rocks, but that hasn't been as big of a hit with her as the "real deal". I do have a couple of special rocks I got at our local bead store for her stocking. I did consider a crystal kit- know of any that produce good results with low frustration/disappointment?

I would have loved something like this at that age - http://www.amazon.com/Mineral-Hardness-Specimens-Magnifier-Accessories/dp/B002CALXHA
DS1 loves rocks, too, but is really into 'gems'.

We haven't used this yet, but I recently bought this well-reviewed crystal growing kit: http://www.amazon.com/POOF-Slinky-Scientific-Explorer-Ultimate-13-Activities/dp/B000ESWFA6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418191580&sr=8-1&keywords=crystal+growing+kit\

What sort of rock tumbler did you buy her? If it was a standard kid one, at 7 with a love of rocks I'd consider upgrading.

I love the Mohs mineral hardness test kit, but it's not available. Maybe I can find it somewhere other than Amazon (gasp!).

I think we'll give the crystal kit a go.

Saw a rock painting kit at Barnes and noble.
