View Full Version : dermoid ovarian cysts?
I went to urgent care yesterday due to moderate lower abdominal pain that had been going on for several days (I could not get an appointment to see a primary care provider until mid-January, since I am a new patient.) After a follow-up ct scan to rule out kidney stones, it turns out I have a large dermoid cyst . I had been monitored during my pregnancy with DS1 for this, but it stayed small. Has anyone been through this? Any advice? I'm happy to know what is causing the pain, but anxious since I think I'll either be going to the ER this weekend, making frantic phone calls Monday AM hoping that someone can see me before Christmas, and/or sticking it out over the holidays with constant moderate pain and more pain killers than I'd like to be taking.
Anyone had a dermoid cyst removed? I'd like to have a better idea of what to expect - how long I might have to wait to have surgery, how long recovery might take, questions to ask when I do get in to see an OBGYN.

I'm sorry you're having to deal with this at the holidays. I had one removed 18 years ago. I had no symptoms - it was discovered during my yearly exam - but they advised me to have it removed as I was about to move away from home & start graduate school. Surgery was a simple outpatient procedure and I don't remember the recovery being difficult or long (but I didn't have kids, or even a job that summer). I hope you get to see someone soon. I can't think of any questions beyond the usual "how many of these have you done?" "what are typical outcomes?" "what would follow-up be like?" questions.
Thanks! I was able to see someone today and get a surgery scheduled. It should be an easy outpatient procedure, but I'll have to take it easy and avoid driving for awhile. I'm still feeling anxious, but am somewhat relieved.

I had one removed, the size of a grapefruit. Since I was undergoing infertility treatments it was done open, not laparoscopic and I have a scar like a C section, bikini line, recovery was fine. I was able to walk around the same day and go up and down stairs the next day. No driving for 2 weeks.
My daughter had a giant one- the size of 2 footballs per pediatric surgery, it was attempted laparoscopic, but they had to convert to open, she has a big midline scar, well, it's a mark of bravery. Her recovery was much worse than mine.
Genetics says that my second daughter is at high risk for one too, do she is having ultrasound every couple of years to watch for one.
Thanks basilicali - your recovery sounds like about what the doctor said to expect. I did not know these could be genetic, but I hadn't heard of them at all until I was told I had one while pregnant with DS1. I am getting anxious to have it out of me!
