Does anyone have any suggestions for loose fitting longer shirts to wear over leggings? Nothing too fancy- just comfortable and cute. TIA

Subbing! I am having trouble with this too. "Tunic tops" aren't long enough on me to cover enough while wearing leggings for me to feel comfortable. I need long tunic tops that cover my entire butt, at least a few inches past my crotch. The only things working for me right now are technically classified as "dresses".

subbing as well...although I think my body shape will prohibit most options! I want longer than crotch, but not so long that it accentuates my rear end or makes me feel like I'm swimming in fabric!

I have a few of those Target tops (I buy 1/ year and they seem to have a slightly different version each year). So comfy. I have a few longer sweaters that I wear too. I just pick random things out when shopping. I'm wearing something like this today http://www.landsend.com/products/womens-year-round-cashmere-easy-v-neck-tunic-sweater/id_272884

I also like a longer t and a drapey cardigan. So long as the t covers my crotch, I'm good. Express has a bunch of great cardigans.

I am very picky about the tops I wear with leggings, as leggings are not pants. ;)

I got the Kitta sweater from Athleta for Christmas, it's just the right length. I like the look of that cowl neck from Target!

I wear Boden tunics over them. They're long enough to be (short) dresses, they work with leggings.

I have heard many people recommend that Target tunic, too bad it's OOS! I like Jane and White Plum for inexpensive tunics. Lots of people like the Piko.

One of my fave long shirts is the Pleione shirt, I wear it with jeggings but it's too short for leggings on me but I'm long-waisted.

I have also purchased several from Loft when they are on 60% off.

I tend to wear lots of layers with leggings. I have a few long tunic length sweaters that I wear. I also have several long tanks from &M http://www.hm.com/us/product/71131?article=71131-A that I layer under shorter sweaters. I also have a blush tee shirt extender from a BBB co-op years ago that was originally bought for when pg with #2 but I use it to add length and an additional layered look to the long tee or cami with a sweater. http://she.steals.com/daily/deal/id/3004937/blush-accessories-tee-shirt-extender-set

The leggings outfit I consistently get the most compliments on (every time I wear it out) is Hue UWW leggings in brown with a tan tee shirt extender, oatmeal long cami, cream colored sweater (it is longer in back and covers my bum but shorter in fron so needs the long layers) with a huge blanket scarf or leopard infinity scarf. Paired with bearpaw boots or riding boots, sometimes with a knit boot cuff for an extra layer :) . I always get people asking about this outfit. That is definitely a very "lean" look though. I also do a similar layer look with my blardigan, which is more forgiving.

I've noticed lots of long tanks, cami's and tees on Jane and Groopdealz, too. Most are poly so I've not pulled the trigger but I may try one and see.

I'm following this thread because although I do have a few great leggings outfits I need more. Just ordered a crap ton of sweaters from Modcloth and am returning all. :(

Today i'm wearing a black shirt (definitely not tunic length) and my black ombre blardigan with a big scarf. Tomorrow i will wear leggings, a shirt, and a long cardigan. And probably the day after that as well, and probably every day until mid March or April. ;)

Do people feel like the front needs to be covered as well when wearing leggings? I do, for myself, but it seems like some are comfortable with just the back being long enough...

I'd rather keep my camel toe covered but I'm sure that everyone's bodies are different and some people might look just fine with the front crotch of the leggings showing...

I'd not feel comfortable wearing that without a long shirt under in front. Too much gape in front and risk of the "camel toe" effect. ;) Super skinny girls with no thighs and a wide thigh gap can probably pull it off, but I'd want a shirt that hit at least at the upper thigh level. ETA: Was posting a walked away so didn't see the post right above mine. I prefer my front covered, too.

On another note, just saw this top that reminds me a lot of the Pleone one that so many here like (linked above) but is meant to be tunic length

yes, I was vague, I meant the top doesn't need to be so long to cover entire rear-end but I too would not be comfortable unless the front of the shirt covered my crotch area. I know I have had shirts/sweaters that fell far enough in front for my comfort but hung up on my rear-end making me feel comfortable. In that case, a long jacket/cardigan/etc would make sense. I should have rephrased or explained.

I was excited for this tunic because I have one similar from LE Canvas from a few years ago, but I was bummed about the Target one. I tried it on in then store and it just didn't fit me well-- too boxy or something. Maybe I like the LE one better because it's more like a sweatshirt since it has a zippered pocket in front which gives it a little more detail?

I bought 2 pairs of Hue leggings back when they had that good deal on Amazon a few months ago, but I still have yet to wear them! When I put them on I feel like I'm wearing tights, even with a long shirt! I adore my Levi jeggings though and have like 7 pairs and wear them every day! Maybe I'm just not a leggings person? Every shirt I try on with the leggings just seem to look better with the jeggings. These are the jeggings I wear every day:

SAME HERE, LOL! I also have a couple of Hue leggings from that deal. My brown one remains unworn and my gray ones have only been worn with a shirtdress or something else that's actually a dress! The only tunic I have that works for me is the gathered band tunic from Boden that could almost qualify as a very short dress. Everything else (long shirts, other tunic tops, pleione blouse) look better with skinny jeans/jeggings/ponte pants on me.

I'm not a skinny girl (size 12) and I wear boden dresses or tunics or other dresses. I treat them like tights pretty much but they are much more comfortable. Over skinny jeans that are denim fabric (I have a pair of AE high rise jeggings and a pair of jag jeggings) I will wear something shorter like a long button down shirt or a longer sweater that doesn't completely cover my butt.

I usually wear a long cardigan that covers my backside, and as long a shirt as I can find that also covers the front. I tried to find a tunic-length top that worked for my body shape last year and was unsuccessful. I finally found one this winter! It's a no-name brand from Nordstrom Rack (not from the full-price store). It's t-shirt weight, so I still wear a cardigan with it on colder days.

I tried that Target tunic in my usual size but it was far too huggy and I didn't have time to try the larger size. By the time I got back there to try the larger size, they were sold out.

My main goal is to avoid the Chico's look; flowy up top with leggings below. I dislike most tunic-length tops because they are either too flowy or too huggy.

I'd rather keep my camel toe covered but I'm sure that everyone's bodies are different and some people might look just fine with the front crotch of the leggings showing...YES -- front and back need to be covered! But, since I usually wear a long cardigan, I sometimes wear a shorter shirt if the cardigan has enough bunchy fabric to mostly cover the front. I have several tops that are definitely too short on their own with leggings, but passable with a cardigan.

I have two pairs of Old Navy leggings--definitely not pants! I have two of these sweaters. They aren't too tight or too baggy and they are long enough. I'm a bigger girl (18-20) and I feel very comfortable. I add an infinity scarf to dress it up some.

DH got me a top similar to the one from target for Christmas, and I like that a lot. It shorter in the front, but still covers the goods. Lol

Oh my gosh! Thank you. I just spent part of my morning on the blog. So many options! Do you have the Piko shirt? That looks like what I am looking for. Is it lose fitting? I am not familiar with the store and sometimes find that long sleeve t shirts are too tight fitting for me, especially in the sleeves. Thanks again:)

Umm, ladies! I know you are both my size so if you're not going to use those HUE leggings and have some buyers remorse I *may* know someone who would buy them.... ;)

I am wearing my black Hue leggings with my blardigan today. I recently bought this top at Modcloth http://www.modcloth.com/shop/basic-tops/draped-in-delight-top-in-charcoal and it is actually perfect for pairing with the longer in back cardigan look. The draped front piece comes down just low enough to "cover the crotchal area" (to quote PTMT lol). I also have an H&M cami under because it is sheer and I am always freezing but with a cardi it's not necessarily needed (back is one layer so semi sheer, front is layered so more opaque). I paired with a cute infinity scarf and am super comfy but put together looking.

LOL, but I do love my HUE leggings!! I just need to find tops that work with them! I love the style of that Modcloth top! Does it completely cover your butt though?? I'm 5'6" for reference, but I think I must have long arms/long torso because I seem to run into length issues wherever I go, top-wise (either that or I just prefer things longer than people make them).

I love leggings and wear them almost every day. Unfortunately most of my clothing is second hand so I'm having trouble thinking of any specific recs from this season! I do think it helps to look in the junior section. Actually a friend of mine passed me down some stuff....later I thanked her and mentioned that I really loved the "red top"...she was confused and finally said, "oh the red dress?" I think it really is sold as a dress but I definitely wear it as a tunic top. Since I am going through my closet I'm going to photo some of the things I like to wear with my leggings.

I have several tunic tops from Boden that I wear with leggings. But they're not warm enough for winter here. I have several long cardigans that are long enough in the back, but was having trouble finding a layering piece that covered the front. I tried the tamis from Old Navy, but the smallest size was still too big. The Pinterest Told Me To blog suggests the long and lean tanks from Target. While they do cover the front, they are a bit thin. I was at Nordstrom Rack today and found this tank that is long enough to work with leggings. https://www.nordstromrack.com/shop/product/922044/abound-double-scoop-neck-tank-juniors?color=IVORY It's mostly OOS online but there were plenty in store. It's a nice thick cotton. Sizing ran quite small and I had to size up to medium.

Nordstrom has a bunch of tunic tops/sweaters that would work with leggings. I just ordered these 2 today.

I'm reporting back with a recommendation from something I just bought a few days ago. It's this tunic (http://www.jjill.com/jjillonline/product/itempage.aspx?BID=556359348&rPFID=2472&item=EW031F&h=M&sk=M) from JJill. It's not as long on me as it is on the model, but does cover the parts I want to cover. On me, it's covers just to the right point, so I'll be checking it all day to make sure it hasn't ridden up. I sized down because I wanted a closer fit, but maybe my usual size would've fit like it does the model. (I didn't buy it to wear with leggings; this discovery is a bonus!) I'm a definite pear and I really like how this particular top looks with leggings, on me. Like I said in my post above, that's not usually the case!

I also got this top (http://www.loft.com/lou-26-grey-double-play-tunic/345247?colorExplode=false&skuId=17634076&catid=catl000016&productPageType=fullPriceProducts&defaultColor=8802) from Loft but haven't tried it with leggings because it would be more the 80's oversized sweatshirt look, but it's definitely long enough on me (longer than the JJill tunic) and I'm sure I'll wear it with leggings soon enough! The reviews say it's not long enough, though. I sized up because they didn't have a medium in the store; maybe that's why it's long enough? I liked the way the large fit.

I have discovered leggings this year and am in love! I am pretty conservative with what I will wear them with, though. I definitely want a lot of coverage. I got this sweater at Nordstrom and really like it: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/caslon-zip-detail-raglan-sleeve-tunic-regular-petite/3783051?origin=category-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=Grey-+Blue+Stripe&resultback=0&cm_sp=personalizedsort-_-browseresults-_-1_1_A

If anyone is looking for nice leggings, these are great. Good fit, nice and thick, but still very comfy: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/two-by-vince-camuto-seamed-back-leggings-regular-petite/3320905?origin=category-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=RICH+BLACK&resultback=200&cm_sp=personalizedsort-_-browseresults-_-1_2_A They only had the black in store, so that's what I have, but I may order the brown since they are such a nice fit.

I will be checking out some of the other recs here. Did I say that I love leggings?!?:)

I love the comfort of leggings too, but mostly pair them with shorter dresses, shirt dresses, or sweater dresses. I do have a chambray tunic from Old Navy that I feel is long enough. I bought a bunch of longer boyfriend style cardigans and long tanks from Target hoping to wear those but I feel a bit naked w/ just leggings under them, so I tend to wear those w/ skinny jeans or my Rockstar jeans from Old Navy which I guess are more jegging like.

Q for those who wear leggings in the winter, how do you not freeze? I have several pairs of Vera Wang leggings for winter wear (a bit thicker than the Old Navy and Target ones I have), but I am always freezing in them, especially if I'm outside (I live in central PA, its been cold here the past few weeks!). I have the same problem with my Rockstar jeans, super comfy but if I walk to the bus stop to get the girls the wind cuts right through them and I have chilly thighs!

No it is not long enough in back, which is why I mentioned pairing it with a cardi that is long in back but needs some "crotchal area" covering. ;) it is also pretty sheer so I don't feel comfortable wearing it alone, not so much for bra showing as for back fat and mommy muffin showing/clinging. I am 5'6" also and longer torso'd. It hits me about mid but in back. But it's perfect with my blardigan or a cocoon sweater (still ISO the perfect one of those though).

For those not familiar with the "cover your crotchal area" reference, and some cute top suggestions...

That is cute. I could do that. I really like the boot cuffs! And it looks like a tee extender is just like a pregnancy Bella Band LOL! I should pull mine out of hiding!

It is! Just sized a little smaller. Though now with my aging body I would LOVE to find one that is a stronger elastic and smoothes things down a bit. ;) Even just to smooth down seam bumps when I wear skinny jeans with a form fitted top.

This is cute! I especially like the blue one with grey accents. I am wondering if this would be long enough, though. The models are wearing them with jeans. I am short, so I wonder if buying a regular instead of a petite would help with length.

Let me know how it works if you get it.

I ordered this in 2 sizes. It's long enough for leggings. While the XS fits me, it's a little clingy and doesn't look as good on me as on the model since my stomach is not as flat. Will see if the S hides my stomach area better.

I just picked up two of these tunic sweaters at Target for $8 on clearance! I got black to go w/ my charcoal leggings and oatmeal to wear w/ brown or black leggings. Its acrylic but feels soft. I have to wear a tank underneath because the neck is kinda big and there is a loose knit pattern around the shoulder area that you can see bra straps through. I got the XS and its still a bit roomy on me in the chest area but fits nicely around my hips (kinda shows some shape but doesn't stick to your backside and show bulges). It hangs longer on me than on the model, but I'm only 5'2". For $8 I figured it would be warm and look cute with leggings, boots, and scarf. They had a ton of other sweaters on clearance and there is a cartwheel 20% off women's clearance code right now.

I saw these when I went last night! But they don't cover my crotchal area:( I don't know if I truly have a long torso, or if it's just because they make smaller sizes with less length. So frustrating!!!

Same here. I don't think it would be long enough on me. It looks barely long enough on the model and the front seems a bit shorter than the back.

I must be really short! The front of the sweater is at my fingertips when I have my hands by my side, so plenty of frontal coverage. And the back is a bit longer. When I first tried it on it felt like a sweater mini dress more than a tunic!

OK, I have these on the way. We'll see what works or not. :) I'm really not sure about the sizing. I'll have to check on that target one.

I also get SO annoyed with smaller size=shorter. The length should be a constant for adult clothing. :( If these aren't quite long enough on their own, though, why not layer with an extra long tank? If I can find those at my target for $8 I'll have to try on. I need more sweaters and for the price those look good. I also found another modcloth top to layer with cardi's or other open front sweaters but can't link it on mobile. Will have to post later.

I really like this tunic but it's only available in XXL. :(

Where do you find extra-long tanks?? I like the idea of a tee extender but I'm afraid it would just shift around too much and I'd worry about it. I would LOVE to get some extra long tanks and camis that cover the crotchal area that can be layered underneath not-quite-long-enough tops!!

Everyone says the long and lean tanks at Target are long. I own several and they're longer than most but definitely do not cover my crotchal area:)

I linked some cami style ones at H&M up thread somewhere, I think. I also just saw one on target (tunic length cami was the name iirc). Jane and groopdealz often have thicker star tanks that are tunic length. The only ones I personally own are the H&M. I tried the long and lean target but found them really tight and not nearly long enough.
Here's the target one.

ETA: Here are some on Jane right now (1/24) https://jane.com/deal/45559/extra-long-thick-strap-layering-tanks-9-colors
I always mean to order them but haven't yet actually bought them. They also have the cami style here regularly. They have cute tunics often but the quality and sizing is hit or miss IME.

I'm going to try to attach pics here. I took pics of the outfit I mentioned previously (with the tee extender). Btw when worn low like I do (top of it is even w top of my leggings) it doesn't shift because it's a cotton on cotton mix. Also took pics of the Modcloth tank I mentioned. I'll get on my computer after this and edit to add the link. One pic alone and one wih my ombré blardigan. Now I need charcoal leggings (I have black and chocolate) so I can wear that outfit with leggings. Pic is with jeans.

Sorry for the bad phone pics. I felt weird putting pics online in an open forum like this so intentionally blocked my face with my phone. ;) Fashion blogger I am not!! Hope the pics work. Also I took these in my room and keep my shoes downstairs, so just pretend they include cute riding boots or fuzzy Bearpaws, and maybe a lace top boot cuff. ;)

ETA: Here is a link to the Modcloth top, but now I'm seeing that it is sold out so maybe not much help to you afterall. :( You can request them to restock it and if they do they will send you an email. When there's something I really want I usually request it several times. Not sure if it helps, but most things have ended up coming back in stock. ;)
http://www.modcloth.com/shop/basic-tops/swingy-fling-tunic

Just in case it comes back- The top is a burnout texture so is pretty thin and I'm not comfortable wearing it without a sweater. I initially gave it a poor review and was going to return it but happened to try it with my ombre blardi and am so glad I did. I may or may not have worn that outfit twice in a row this week.... ;) I like the way the uneven bottom blends with the bottom of the blardi so it makes for a really seamless look. It's a little low cut so I probably need either a scarf or maybe my Coobie lace top Bra-let under it for everyday wear but it is super soft and comfy. I hope they bring it back so other mamas have a chance to try it!

Finally made it over to Nordstroms today. Bought this Caslon tunic in an xs (in the grey with pale blue stripe). I am 5'2" and typically wear a size small/4-6 on top. However, I found this tunic to run big. I was swimming in the small. The petite version didn't look right on me. The sleeves were short and the sweater was still boxy (in the petite small). So I went with the regular xs. http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/caslon-zip-detail-raglan-sleeve-tunic-regular-petite/3783051?cm_cat=datafeed&cm_ite=caslon(r)_zip_detail_raglan_sleeve_tunic_(r egular_&cm_pla=women:tops:sweater&cm_ven=Google_Product_Ads_pla_online&mr:referralID=1dac88d6-a41f-11e4-a858-001b2166c2c0&siteId=je6NUbpObpQ-HZvv31Czra29x_m7SjDPug ETA: a photo of me in the tunic plus the grey Vince Camuto leggins I bought. These may go back because they are kind of big. They are bagging in the backs of the knees and are a little big in the waist. I think I could use a petite in them.

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g316/lmintzer/IMG_3298_zps556734ca.jpg (http://s59.photobucket.com/user/lmintzer/media/IMG_3298_zps556734ca.jpg.html)

Also ordered the side snap sweater in the blue with grey in an XS. The one I bought in store appears thicker than the side snap version. And this is considered a sweater and not a tunic. Hope it fits similar to the one I bought in store. Like the sale price on this one better! http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/caslon-side-snap-sweater-regular-petite/3783067?cm_em=&cm_mmc=email_tran-_-012415-_-dtc_order_confirm-_-proddescr1

Thanks for the suggestion! Very comfy over leggings. Feels like wearing PJs.

I forgot about those! Yes, those are nice and long, and a bit thicker than the H&M ones. I always avoid going into Buckle because the staff there are SO annoying and pushy. I don't own any because they've been out of the colors I wanted in the sizes I need. I tried on a few in other colors and IME the run TTS to a little small.

I take the large. I'm a size six with a DD bra size. I think they run a little juniors-ish. But nice and long and there are lots of styles. I order online-I don't know if I've ever been in the store!

Lmintzer, I love the stripey tunic on you! I had a couple similar ones from Old Navy but they basically wore out.

ETA: I love the long and lean tanks from target but they are def. not what I am looking for to go over leggings. Need much more length like pp said. I did get a stripey short sleeve tunic/dress from my favorite thrift. it's from H&M and I love how it fits. But that's the problem with buying used, I have no idea if I can find the same design now.

Thanks Melanie. : ) I returned the leggings--they wouldn't stay up--and am waiting for Nordys to ship me the petite versions to I can wear my new outfit. Also still waiting on the side-snap tunic. Their shipping may be free, but it is sure not speedy.

I finally got a chance to try this Loft top with leggings today, and I really like the combo!

I usually wear a long cardigan that covers my backside, and as long a shirt as I can find that also covers the front.

This is my strategy too. I just got some of the gap fluid shirts - a long and a short sleeve, that work really well. I really like the fluid tees, they float over problem areas. Then I add a longer cardigan.

I've also found a few tops in the GAP Maternity section that work really well. I just look for the ones that don't have ruching on the sides. But I have one long sleeve black maternity tee from when I was pregnant, I still wear that out in public with my leggings. It's so dark, you can't really see the ruching.

I LOVED my Gap maternity ruched side tanks and wore them for a long time after pregnancy. I wish they'd make some non-pg styles that are similar.
