My son (aged almost 7 years) is asking for house shoes, which I would classify as slippers with good support and serious tread on the soles, often with a velcro fastener around the ankle. They are a lot more like shoes than typical slippers. In Germany, he had something like this, high around the ankle:
http://www.amazon.de/Giesswein-Strass-Jungen-Hausschuhe-dk-blau/dp/B00NSLB6RY/ref=sr_1_16?s=shoes&ie=UTF8&qid=1424848427&sr=1-16

Here's a different brand that is low around the ankle and with some of that serious sole I mentioned:
http://www.amazon.de/Superfit-408271-Jungen-Flache-Hausschuhe/dp/B00OOTQZFM/ref=sr_1_6?s=shoes&ie=UTF8&qid=1424848427&sr=1-6

I have also seen some that are high around the ankle and have a zipper fastener down the top of the foot.

Anyone know any brands or words I should google? Amazon came up with a few, but nothing with the zipper and not much that was high around the ankle. Any other recs?

It's funny how slippers are so different than hausschuhe, isn't it? I wish we had brought some back with us.

My DS has gotten to like Acorn brand. They have a rubber sole and are pretty supportive, but they aren't high around the ankle.

Would he wear the Garnet Hill ones? http://www.garnethill.com/boiled-wool-slipper-boots-2c-sizes-04-4/213473?&defattribvalue=main

ETA Acorn actually does make one that comes up around the ankle. Still not quite the same as what you're looking for though. http://www.amazon.com/Acorn-Kids-Kadabra-Slipper-K/dp/B00JHCG10A/ref=pd_sim_shoe_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=0EQFQ7HHSQ0TAJV142RY

I haven't found any here. I ended up ordering them from amazon.de. The shipping is not too bad and you don't pay VAT.
