We hosted DD1's 12th birthday party last weekend, and she chose to have a mystery party. We'd done the medieval mystery before, so this time she chose a movie awards theme. This theme was perfect for her age because it gave her and her friends an excuse to "dress fancy." The kids did a great job reading their parts, though I didn't like the script as well as the medieval one. It was pretty obvious who the culprit was. Still lots of fun though, and the customer service from Dramatic Fanatic was very good.

Could you tell a little bit more about this? It sounds really interesting. What did you buy from the company and how many kids were there? And everyone reads from a script as the story unfolds? How long does it take? Thanks in advance!!

Sure! The printable party kit from DF includes the complete "play," including a script for the host to follow and cards you hand each of the characters to read. It's really well organized to keep everyone on track. They suggest assigning parts ahead of time so the guests can come in character, but we just hand them out when everyone arrives. (There are usually 8 parts that are essential to the play, and you wouldn't want one of those going to a kid who doesn't show up.) We tell them the theme ahead of time and encourage them to dress up, and we also provide some spare props/costume pieces.

The movie awards script took about an hour. I seem to remember the medieval one taking a bit longer than that. There are optional activities that allow you to adjust the length somewhat. I wish we had done more of that this time because we had extra time at the end, and a house full of 6th graders at loose ends is not a good thing!

We've done many theme parties, and the DF ones have been the easiest to pull off. There is much less prep work than say, the Harry Potter party, which almost killed us. ;)

We did the Pop Star mystery for 6th graders a few months ago and it was a huge hit.
