So normally we've seen pics posted of people's super nice kitchens, playrooms, etc but I thought it would be refreshing to see some real life pics of the mess that comes with having a family! I'll start.

These were taken this morning. My housekeeper is coming today and after taking these pics I spent about an hour picking things up so that she can clean. These are the messiest areas in the house. The boys' bedrooms, the playroom, and the bathrooms are usually pretty neat so those would be boring pics! Our house is pretty small-- 4 bedrooms and 1850 square feet.

The clothes piled high on top are the kids outgrown clothes that I need to go through and put in bins.

Ah, thank you for this thread! My house is constantly going back and forth between neat and organized and a mess and it is incredible how fast it can happen! And then I always look around and think what is wrong with us that it can get so messy, so fast bc it always seems like my friends houses are neat and ready for company!

OP- those aren't messy! Those are 15 minutes away from being totally clean. When it takes an hour + to unearth it all then you can say it's messy. :)

I might win this one this week. We were supposed to move last Saturday but our closing has been delayed that is to a QC review of our buyers' mortgage and a pesky tax verification that the IRS should have sent days ago.

I love this thread!! though, I see no sticky floors and awesome organization and design. Let me see if I can get the sticky floor covered.

eta: I am surprised how un-sticky my kitchen appears on my camera!

I haven't figured out how to post pics. But my master bedroom is looking mighty horrifying. I'm trying to get rid of a lizard that found its way in there! And my dining table. That thing always looks horrible. The kids do art projects there and it is right next to DD's room. As a result I always have a mix of markers, papers and board books that need to get put away sitting on it. Right now it is compounded by laundry (trying to keep it off the ground so we don't attract lizards!) and all the dining chairs because DD has taken to climbing onto the table. I would be SO embarrassed if my IRL friends saw either of these areas!

I'll play. Hope this makes someone feel good about what they do or don't accomplish at their own house :)

I included some sticky floor in there for PP. DH has been out of town, so our standards have slipped a little. That's what I'm telling myself anyway.

Ha, we used to have the exact same slide, but in green, in our master bedroom! We now have a big plastic 7 foot tall basketball hoop in our living room!

My house beats all of yours and it was so clean only 24 hours ago! How does this happen?! It's maddening sometimes.

It would literally take a daily cleaning crew to keep my house neat. It's impossible. I marvel at how some people with kids keep their houses neat.

Y'all rock. I'm ashamed to admit that your "messy home" photos are roughly equivalent to my house on a "we're all picked up and ready for the cleaners!" day.

These are not that messy. Mine has been worse. We have problem areas that need to be addressed. Namely the study and guest room, that tend to be huge clutter and storage areas.

Glad some of you think my house doesn't look that messy! DH would disagree, as he thinks our house looks like a bomb went off! I tell him most peoples' houses with kids are similar or worse, but he totally doesn't believe me!

Great thread! I'm at work so can't post pics, but I was literally feeling sick all week because our dining table was covered with crap. Several days' worth of newspapers, DH's laptop and various papers for the freelance redesign project he's doing for a magazine, some of DS' school daily sheets, etc. We have a smallish house and not a lot of places to put stuff, so it all ends up there.

And don't me started on my guest room! Pics coming tonight. :ROTFLMAO:

It's funny - none of my friends around here seem to get overflow of stuff into their dining room and/or guest room like we do, but it is making me feel much better that people here have mentioned it as a problem for their houses too!

So I guess this is the one benefit to being in a small small apartment - no room for all the piles to gather. Honestly sometimes it's bad but because every single space must be used, walked on/through, played on, cooked on, never an empty room or closed door, etc. we can never let things really accumulate. Just some of the LR shelves. I guess more mess is what I can look forward to one day ;) And learning how to post pics?!?!?! How do I do that pretty please?

Yes, it is a huge problem with our house and one reason is lack of closet or built in shelving. We went from a house that was over 100 yrs old with lots of built ins to a house with ZERO built in anything, and small closets. I also have a duh and kid problem... they never put things back where they belong. My dh frustrates me, as he acts like he doesn't understand that there is a place for each item... so no wonder our house is a mess. He contributes to it. When you use something and then just lay it down and don't think about it again until you want to use it again... yes it causes problems. It's like he was never brought up with the idea that after you use X, you put it back in its place. This is why I have 10 prs of scissors. Somehow they all end up in the garage or basement, all b/c of HIM!

We definitely have the problem of things not being put back in their place, but we also just have so much STUFF- stuff that doesn't have a place. A lot of it is things that are only in the house temporarily, but there is a constant stream of items like this. Its mostly DH's stuff. He has an appliance business and works out of the house. He gets boxes delivered all the time and they just sit here until he uses the item...we have tools and random appliance parts around...plus there's just the standard amazon or zappos boxes of mine lying around all the time. I always joke that we seriously need a receiving/processing/shipping room in this house! Our house is small, and there just isn't an extra room for all these odds and ends.

We live in a small home (1400 sq ft / 5 people + 1 dog). We're in the midst of having some shelving built and are in mass chaos. It's messy on a good day - flat out crazy now.
