View Full Version : Keeping outside dirt out of house

I need some new ideas for keeping outside dirt out. We just got bunnies 2 weeks ago, and that has greatly increased the indoor/outdoor traffic, even when it's rainy, muddy, etc. The dirt tracked through the house is driving me crazy! (And that's been an eye opener for me, because I want a dog, which might bring in even more dirt?) I think we need to go back to having a series of mats, etc., instead of just having one inside. I'm looking at putting this boot scraper (http://http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008REE7DW/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A281ICWJBRZ31L) and a scrubby mat outside the back door (maybe this one?), (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000KKMMR4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER) and either keeping the mat we have inside or getting a new one if there's something better (was going to link to what we have, but honestly cannot remember what brand it is). We need low-profile in that spot, though, because that door doesn't haven't much clearance at the bottom.

Any ideas?

Do you take shoes off in your house? That'd help, if not.

No shoes in the house. We only have dirt in our entryway.

We've always had the "shoes off" rule, but now my kids seem to pop in and out more frequently, and go through the yard (however muddy it is) to get the bunnies or play with them in the yard. Even when they take their Crocs off just inside the back door the dirt seems to end up getting tracked all around the house. This house does not have any real entry ways, which has always driven me crazy. And the back door (which sees the most bunny action) is especially bad. It opens into our dining room - the door is literally 4 feet from the dining room table. And maybe less than that from the the bar & barstools. So, it's a very congested & busy area already and the addition of dirt sprinkled all over it all the time is making me crazy. I thought of adding a boot tray to contain dirty shoes, but I don't think we really have the space for it. So, adding more rugs and scrapers outside was the only other thing I could come up with so far.

Shoes off inside of the house. This is what we've always done and it helps a lot.

We are a shoes off house too, but we had so much dirt and sand in our entryway this winter. I bought a "Dirt Stopper Runner" from Solutions catalog and it really works!
