I went to the gyn for my yearly checkup and she asked if I was taking calcium and/or vit d supplements. I do take vit D...mostly to help boost mood/energy during the winter months. She seemed OK with that and didn't push, but it got me wondering if I really should be taking calcium for bones. I really have tried to eliminate dairy due to digestive issues and only occasionally will have a little cheese.

So are you taking calcium? And if so, what are you using?

I don't do more than just TUMS. I take 2 - twice a day. But honestly i'm interested in hearing opinions of what others think of this as a calcium source!

I KNOW from family history I should definitely be taking a supplement, but i have just been lazy about it so far. I guess the tums is better than nothing so far? Maybe?

I'll be following this post!

No, I don't think the benefits of calcium supplementation are proven, and in may even be detrimental.

I take these. They are yummy. Also (and I don't remember the details) when I was looking into this I remember reading that some of the vitamins are in a difficult to absorb formulation or calcium while some are in an easy to absorb formulation. These are supposed to be easy to absorb.

Yes a cal-mag supplement from Costco. I have taken it since I was in my 20's as my mom had early onset osteoporosis. I have cut back on how much I take though now since it can be detrimental. I can feel it in my teeth when I miss several days of taking it so I do think it is beneficial for me especially since I try to limit dairy and there is no way I could eat enough greens, etc. to make sure I get my correct dose. I am in chemopause and taking tamoxifen so I would be dumb to not supplement.

To the PP taking Tums, doesn't that have aluminum in it? If so, I would not be taking that as your calcium supplement.

Oh and I am make sure to not take any supplement with carbonate it for a variety of reasons. I think the one I take is citrate.
