Update
So I went to Macy's last night and bought the following items and she loved them all!:boogie:. She told me it is just the really fancy poufy dresses she doesn't like.

Speechless green top/black dress (http://m.macys.com/shop/product/speechless-girls-2-piece-necklace-striped-dress-set?ID=2463964)
Jessica Simpson black Peter Pan collar dress (http://m.macys.com/shop/product/jessica-simpson-girls-shareen-star-print-peter-pan-collar-dress?ID=2421581)
Speechless black/silver maxi skirt (http://m.macys.com/shop/product/speechless-girls-a-line-sparkle-skirt?ID=2441493)
Jessica Simpson black/white fuzzy sweater (http://m.macys.com/shop/product/jessica-simpson-girls-snow-fuzzy-sweater?ID=2456989)

Plus a few other dresses on clearance for less than $15 a piece. I can't find links online though.

My Dd1 has all of a sudden become resistant to dresses. She has a singing performance at 1 pm on Thursday at school, and then on Christmas Eve (4 pm) at church and followed by Christmas Eve dinner at my aunt and uncle's house. She has this dress (crayon kids dresses 960) from her cousin's wedding this past August and I can buy her a red or green sash to go with it, but she is being resistant. I would like her to wear a dress or at least a sweater set with a skirt, but I really don't know what to do. I need something that is dressy, but not over the top dressy like I am guessing she thinks the linked dress now is.

She has this sweater (http://m.gap.com/product.html?dn=gp904545002&dv=1&sdkw=sequin-cable-knit-sweater-P904545&kwid=1&referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gap.com%2Fproducts%2Fseq uin-cable-knit-sweater-P904545.jsp%3Fpid%3D904545002%26vid%3D1&locale=en_US&sdReferer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gap.com%2Fproducts%2Fpu llover-sweaters-for-girls.jsp&pid=904545002&sem=false&vid=1) and floral jeggings (http://m.gap.com/product.html?dn=gp684277002&dv=1&sdkw=1969-serious-stretch-floral-legging-jeans-P684277&kwid=1&referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gap.com%2Fproducts%2F196 9-serious-stretch-floral-legging-jeans-P684277.jsp%3Fpid%3D684277002%26vid%3D1&locale=en_US&sdReferer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gap.com%2Fproducts%2Fje ggings-for-girls.jsp&pid=684277002&sem=false&vid=1) (and they look nicer than standard jeggings due to the floral print:)) outfit from The Gap which she could wear to school, but I have a feeling she would be one of the only girls not in a dress.

Oddly, DD1 who has been very resistant to dresses has realized that she needs another for those occasions. She likes the look of this one, picked it herself!

That was about the age when DD1 declared her dislike for dresses. Rather than fight the battle, we got a couple nice, longer skirts that pair well with tights and flats, and some nice shirts/sweaters that could be dressy, or paired with her everyday jeans if she wanted. Now DD2 is wearing all the same things as hand-me-downs!

My niece needed an outfit for a Christmas party and her holiday choral concert. My SIL said she got it at Children's Place, but I don't see anything like it on their website. It was a cute black short skirt, tutu sort of like, paired with an ivory sleeveless blouse. She wore black tights and and black flats. Very cute and age appropriate. She is 12. I'll poke around online to see if I can find anything similar.

I just went through this with DD1. She only owned one casual dress and we needed something for a Bar Mitzvah. What I realized is I can't pick it out for her. If I held a dress up, it branded it as an instant "no." We went to MANY stores before she surprised me by picking out a beautiful cream dress with a light gold shimmer at Macy's. It's not this dress, but similar. I liked it because it meant she could wear it for the Bar Mitzvah and Christmas and we would't have go shopping again. It's also very soft :-) : http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/speechless-girls-lace-dress?ID=2450406&CategoryID=5991&LinkType=#fn=sp%3D1%26spc%3D100%26slotId%3D45%26kw s%3Dgirls%20dress%20gold%20lace

I thought we were in the clear... then found out she wanted to wear it her black faux-suede slouchy boots :-)

I think we're dealing with the fact that our girls are in a huge long term process of change. They aren't quite comfortable with everything that's going on with their bodies (or are nervous about future changes to their bodies.) And they genuinely want to still be kids and still be comfortable, so they are resistant to fancy dresses which limit their movement and may have slightly uncomfortable fabric. There's really a tug of war inside them- "want to grow up" is trying to make peace with "want to stay a kid." It helped my DD when she got to pick the dress and felt like the decision was in her hands.

Another Macy's success story. DGD1 is on the cusp between girls' and junior sizes, and needed a fairly dressy dress for several holiday occasions. After striking out in the junior department, she picked out this one, and it is very flattering and she really likes it.

Apparently many of the dressy junior dresses were STRAPLESS -- definitely not what most tweens need!
