I am in the market for a rain jacket and a mid-layer, ideally both packable, for an Alaska cruise this summer. I have no real rain coats in my closet, so this will be a good addition. The packable (prima loft) mid-layer will be useful, also, for sititng out at fall and spring soccer games.

I have a few of these home and am having trouble deciding on colors. The Patagonia Nano Puff jacket does fit under both types of raincoat without a problem. The Marmot (sportier) rain coat is completely packable into its own pocket as is the Patagonia layer. The North Face rain coats are not. They are a little dressier, though, so I wonder if would be a nice addition to my wardrobe.

I would even consider keeping both styles of rain coat, as I can use the Marmot for running.

At any rate, want to play colors? I do wear a lot of teal/blue/green, but I am willing to branch out, too.
I can't fit all pictures in one post, so I will put the "blue/green" ones here and the primary colors in a reply to this thread (below).

(Those are the 4 Marmot jackets I like: navy, two-toned, sea blue, and some kind of slightly greener version--on sale).

(These are possible mid-layers--I have the blue/green one at home--it is pretty, but definitely bright.)

Here are the other jackets/colors:

(North Face jacket--a little dressier, cuter in person than in photo, fits nicely)

(Out of my usual comfort zone, but would be cute with red mid-layer)

Here is the bright blue Nano Puff on. (And no, I don't have all of these jackets/coats at home--but I'd better decide before I wind up bringing them all home and needing to return most of them. LOL.)

Personally I love the B&W NF jacket, with either the grey or red mid layer. But I am VERY into grey right now, and always love red. :)

I like all of them; hard to decide which is best! I'm not a big fan of black NF jackets just because I see them everywhere (and have one myself), and I think a black rain coat is pretty drab when the weather is already so drab. :) I'm not much of a cool color person, but do like your choices, especially the teal ones. I have a fuchsia colored Marmot one like yours above and like the pop of color (I'm not into orange or yellow, like more olive greens, pinks, reds, purples, and generally avoid blue because they're hard to wear with blue jeans, which I wear a lot of). I also like brighter colors for out walking/ running, especially in the rain or evening, so it's easier for cars to see me. Does your DH have a certain color rain coat that you want to coordinate with/ not clash or be too matchy-matchy with?

Have a wonderful trip! :boogie:

No DH--we are separated. I will be cruising with my two boys (ages 15 and 12), my dad, my brother, and my SIL. I drove my poor boys nuts with matching/coordinating colors for a recent family event, so I promised myself I will not worry about if/how I coordinate with them this time around. LOL.

I agree--probably not a plain black rain coat. That would be low(er) on my list.

I like bright for running, too. : )

Here are the ones I have in my house now. A few more just arrived in today's mail. (Trying to insert the "bag over head" smiley, but it's not working). Excuse the rained on hair and no makeup--could have used one of these running errands today!

(nothing layer under it so looks a tiny bit big)
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g316/lmintzer/IMG_5830_zps3lrurpnq.jpg (http://s59.photobucket.com/user/lmintzer/media/IMG_5830_zps3lrurpnq.jpg.html)
(rain jacket pretty close match to mid-layer--but then too "matchy"--also, this sale color jacket came sooo wrinkled)
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g316/lmintzer/IMG_5827_zpsahedtxnr.jpg (http://s59.photobucket.com/user/lmintzer/media/IMG_5827_zpsahedtxnr.jpg.html)
(good color coordination with the little turquoise details on the navy jacket--there is a little turquoise stipe on the inside that shows when jacket is open and the logo is turquoise--but navy may not be so good for running--and as previous poster said, provides no contrast with denim; one possibility would be to pair the turquoise mid layer with the two-toned Mermot jacket--not sure I like the two-toned one as well, but would provide some contrast and would still be nice and bright for running).

(slightly bluer Mermot jacket in better condition with white mid-layer--looks good together, but I'm really not a fan of white on me--or this particular mid-layer--it's almost too snug to wear on its own)

Any thoughts?

I love, love the black/white/gray NF one. I think the bright blue nano puff looks really cute on you and i also like it layered with the navy rain jacket. Don't care for the white. I also like you in the bright blue rain jacket, but not layered with the blue puffer. Of the ones you linked to but don't have IRL pic of, I like the red best.

I like the pic with the bright blue nano-puff and the lighter blue marmot. I have a similar marmot rain jacket and I got royal blue just so it's a pop of color on a dreary day! I think the blues look good on you.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions. I am leaning toward these 3 if I want to be wear puffer with either:

Or this set if I want to keep the bright puffer (wouldn't wear puffer with TNF), and would be a little sad not to have brighter Marmot for running:

I love the North Face jacket. I would do that one, but would do navy. I love the black and white check, but would be afraid of getting tired of the pattern quickly. I also wouldn't worry about wearing navy with jeans. I love navy, and wear it with dark jeans often!

Yeah, I would get tired of the pattern, too, and for some reason that checkered one just looks like a teenage snowboarder, so it kinda says "snow" and "ski hill" a bit too much for my preference. I actually really liked the look of the white jacket under the blue rain jacket, but otherwise that silvery looking jacket under a turquoise blue one would be cool!
Do you have a special handbag that you need it not to clash with? I have a magenta, orange, and black (sounds bad, but it's cute) diaper bag, so I don't wear red or some other crazy color with it so it won't clash too much.
