Anyone have this surgery?

So DS1 (7) is scheduled to have a radiofrequency turbinate reduction surgery on Monday. He has been congested forever, and the past two weeks have been miserable. The ENT said he's completely swollen and there's absolutely no air flow going on in his nasal passages...and this was after some megadoses of afrin. Apparently it's a complication of his untreated seasonal allergies, which the ENT described as "wicked!" He will also need to start immunotherapy for his allergies ASAP. Hopefully DS1 will be able to breathe through his nose again soon. Poor kiddo hasn't been able to sleep well in forever.

No experience with the surgery but I know you've been wondering what is going on with your DS forever. It sounds like you have a diagnosis and a plan of treatment. I'm glad you've progressed that far. Here's hoping he'll feel better very soon!

Thanks! I really, really hope this will be the solution. We've been to so many specialists and have never figured anything out with him. I was beginning to lose hope. Hopefully he will be able to breath after the surgery and sleep well, and maybe his behavior problems will subside.

No advice, but lots of P & PT he gets some relief. Good luck!

I had that surgery but also had blocked sinus at the same time. I would ask lots of questions so you know what to expect. I believe there will be packing in the nose and nasal rinses afterwards. I will say that it took me a good month to feel like my old self after this surgery,

Anecdotally I would also look into what food sensitivities he may have. Inflammation occurs even if there isn't an visible reaction. I've all but eliminate my allergy response through diet modification.

Sensitivity is hard to test as your body reacts different so food allergy testing may not yield good results. Only true way is elimination and then reintroduce to see if there is a response.

Something to consider.

Also, it seems very likely that your DS is pretty allergic to some environmental allergy, a pet, plant, dust mites in his pillow, rug, carpet, etc. It could even be from a previous owner/occupant of your home.

If you have any pets with fur or carpet, I would seriously consider removing those from his room and from the home.

Thanks for the responses. He had allergy testing 15 mo ago and was positive for trees, grasses, weeds, and outdoor mold. Nothing indoors. (Oral meds made him crazy and didn't help. Neither did nasal spray.) We are having repeat testing on Tuesday so the new allergist can formulate the allergy shots. I wouldn't be surprised if dust mites are positive. If that's the case, we will rip out the carpet in his room and get rid of the black out curtains (boo.). We don't have any pets. Previous owners of our house had a dog, but we've been in the house 10 years and have had the carpets steam cleaned a few times.

Hmmm, in that case I would be suspicious of a dairy intolerance. Does he have any gi symptoms, stomach ache, gas, milk cravings, diarrhea or constipation?

I hope he does very well with the surgery and can get feeling much better soon!

What an appropriate post. I am taking DS in this afternoon and I suspect we may have scheduling the same surgery. Crazy question, but can you see the turbinates up his nose? If so, what do they look like? DS has two "pea like" balls up his nostrils. Very red and inflamed and almost completely closing his nasal passage. He's 4. The NP that saw him last month when he had a sinus infection said she can't tell if it's nasal polyps or an enlarged turbinate. I'm a little nervous for this appointment.

No symptoms. He doesn't drink milk, but he does have yogurt in the morning and string cheese for a snack

Let me know how it goes. I never really looked into DS's nose. The ENT wasn't able to see much with the scope because he was so congested. So he had to have a CT scan. No polyps but the start of one/some (?).

I had this surgery 3 or 4 years ago. I have allergies plus asthma and am rarely able to breathe out of my nose. The surgery sounded wonderful and I was so excited for the results.

I would ask a lot of questions about the recovery. I was shocked at how much pain I was in, both immediately afterwards and for about the next week. It took a while before I felt okay. Once I did feel better, being able to breathe was amazing! Unfortunately, for me, that only lasted about a year. I'd say I'm back to where I was pre-op at this point, with very restricted nasal airways.

In hindsight, I wouldn't have gone through with it if I'd known that the results are temporary for many people.
