View Full Version : What Are Twelve-Year-Old Girls Reading These Days?

Our niece is 12. At Thanksgiving, she insisted she doesn't want anything for Christmas. This is a lie she's telling herself.

Last year, DH asked BIL (niece's father) what she'd like; BIL told us bongo drums.

DH told me to go out and acquire bongo drums; I (stupidly) did.

DH ended up on his SIL's fecal roster and we suspect the drums have been thrown out.

I refuse to ask BIL what the niece wants this year.

Asking the niece is hard; I don't have her phone # and she's been dealing with a long illness (now diagnosed as arthritis, but I think she should be re-tested for Lyme - but I'm not her parents) AND she's "that kid" in her family - the one likely to be tiptoed around, etc. - so taking her at her word is tempting, but will cause problems for her parents leading to us being on the fecal roster again. I'm tired of being on the fecal roster, to be honest.

Anyway, I'm doing wear/read for her gift this year unless she makes up her mind to tell me what she actually wants. I have one "wear" (a soft plaid scarf in her favorite color) and will get another one soon.

SO ... what are 12-year-olds reading these days? (I think she's in 6th grade?)

My 11-yo DD is reading Lockwood and co. book 4. I started reading the series after the first book was recommended here. Great books!

Thank you!

I know I'd seen it around here but I couldn't remember the title and mixed it up with one that is similar but WAY inappropriate.

I highly Recommend. _I Will Always Write Back: How One Letter Changed Two Lives_ by Martin Ganda

I also really love Rose Under Fire by Elizabeth Wein (And Code Name Verity) Though they may be more HS books.

Anne Frank Remembered: The Story of the Woman who helped Hide the Frank Family by Miep Gies is also really good.

My almost 12 year old and her friends are all enjoying "wrek this journal"

https://www.amazon.com/Wreck-This-Journal-Keri-Smith/dp/039953346X

My daughter "loved" when she got it, but it sat on a shelf for months. But, for the past several weeks, I have seen her doing many of the activities and several of her friends have said they want their own journal.

Several of the 5th graders at DD's school were looking for that one at Book Fair earlier this month. DH's SIL used to request craft kits for this child, so it's a possibility.

Nonfic and historical fiction are kind of a sticky thing for me - I'd have to know for sure she'd enjoy those (they sound awesome to me, but I have a "thing" for WWII) before I considered them.

...

I've read about the first one (it's on my shortlist, to be honest!) and have seen the 2nd one in the bookstore. Thank you!
