I have a soup currently cooking in my crockpot; it's for DD's lunches next week. I wasn't thinking when I started it and it's not going to be done until after 10 (for reference, I am usually in bed by 9), ugh! Can I just stick the crockpot in the fridge as soon as it's done or does it need to cool down for a while first. TIA!

I wouldn't put the whole crock pot insert in fridge as the temp will hover in the danger zone too long. You need to put it in shallow container (s) so it cools quickly.

Definitely break it up into smaller containers to cool. You'd be surprised how long a crock-pot full of soup will still be warm in the fridge. The other problem is it can heat up your fridge if you put too much hot stuff in. If you are in a cold area I've been putting things in my non-insulated garage to cool. My garage is actually colder than my fridge and I don't worry about it being warmed by whatever I'm trying to cool.

You should split it into smaller containers for food safety. A hot ceramic pot of soup will cool slowly in the fridge and can raise the temperature of everything around it while leaving the center of the soup still too warm. If you're really lucky the hot pan will shatter the glass shelf (ask me how I know....)

Ok, thanks everyone. I will divide it into smaller containers as soon as it's done.

Putting a hot crockpot into the cold fridge could also cause the crockpot to crack. The crock shouldn't go from one extreme temperature to another.
