Have you read the book, A Discovery of Witches? And the rest of the All Souls trilogy?

I really like these books. I'm rereading them now.

Are there any similar books that you can recommend? I don't want smutty romance books.
I like the All Souls books because there is a lot of history & substance in the books.

Thanks!

I would recommend the Kricket series, the Marking Time series, the Premonition series. All are exceptionally fantastic!

It does have some smut, but if you haven't read Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, it is well researched from what I have seen. And many libraries have a "reads like" reference available for readers. If there are ways to select historical work over paranormal romance, steer the reference tool that way to make sure you find what you want.

ETA- the Mary Russell series, which is a redo of Sherlock Holmes is great. Were you looking for a certain era? Or more for any historic fiction with good research and strong women?

You might like the Parasol Protectorate books by Gail Carriger. There's some not particularly graphic sex scenes (mostly in the first book) but they're funny and fast moving with paranormal/steampunk elements - I just reread them this week actually.

I like the witches/vampires aspect of The Discovery of Witches. I don't mind some sex. But I don't want the books to be like Fifty Shades
of Gray. With Fifty Shades of Gray, I felt like I was basically reading a porno.

I do like the historical fiction aspect too. And strong women. :)

I've actually bookmarked the Mary Russell series from another "What are you reading?" BBB thread. I should give them a try! Thank you!

I haven't read the books you are referencing but I put them on my library wishlist! However, I think you might like A Court of Thorns and Roses and A Court of Mist and Fury. The third book comes out in May and I can't wait. I also loved the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series.

I think you'd love the Shades of London series by Maureen Johnson. I'm reading it b/c Lin Manuel Miranda mentioned it in a Tweet or FB post. Loving it so far.

If you like the magic angle, try some Naomi Novik. She did Uprooted, which I loved, and apparently has done a historical series which uses dragons for warfare in the era of Napoleon - which I am looking into.

Looking on Goodreads, people seem to have a love/hate thing with this book - you either love it or detest it. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22544764-uprooted

I just got Uprooted from the library today. I'm about 20 pages in so far. So far so good! :)

It's not historic, but you might also like Wen Spencer's Elfhome series. Strong female characters, some romance, action, magic, elves, and she does a lot of research for her writing. There are Japanese cultural references, which I enjoy - the only bad thing I can say is that one of the cover art pieces isn't my taste. Minor quibble. Tinker, the first, is my favorite. Wen Spencer, Juliet Marillier, and Elizabeth Moon are my favorite authors.

It's funny because I'll sometimes not read a book because of the cover art.

Here is the one I didn't like - looks like it was meant to appeal to the non-uterus crowd. The book itself was good- I just was embarrassed to be seen with it.

I'm glad you liked it! I need to look into that dragon series too, but Wen Spencer's latest is waiting for me on the library holds shelf first. :)

ETA- Black Wolves of Boston. Werewolves set on the modern day east coast, witches, vampires; should be a good read, too!

Glad you're liking Parasol Protectorate! I actually just read Discovery of Witches inspired by this thread since the library had the ebook and just started the second book. I will say it's been a while since I'd read a 600 page book - most of what I read is more like 200 pages (I read lots of middlebrow fiction, mysteries and some romance novels). Fun to immerse myself in a longer book though!

I really liked the first one, the second was a bit of a slog for the first couple hundred pages(yes, we get it, you talk funny for ye olde England). I tend to think just about every book could benefit from more editing (see the later harry potters) but definitely enjoying and going to read all 3.

Just finished Uprooted. Loved it! Thank you for the recommendation!!

Just started Uprooted based on the rec in this thread. Like it very much so far!
Also read the Shades of London series based on this thread. Was a little frustrated that my library had the first two books in kindle format but not the third (grrrrrrr!) but I was so vested in the series I just wound up buying it. Neat series!

Have you ever gone to one of the author events where you can meet a bunch of the authors?

Amy A. Bartol has them listed on her website. I'd love to go and meet all these writers!!

I'm finishing up The Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger. It has supernatural and steampunk elements, and no real sex scenes. The writing is fantastic, with tons of witty dialogue. I liked the first book best, but was intrigued enough by the characters to keep on with the series. I'm not usually a huge steampunk reader, the I really enjoyed this.

She has a couple of other series, too, set in the same world. Finishing School and the Custard Protocol. Finishing School takes place before the Parasol Protectorate. Custard Protocol takes place afterwards.
