mods - move to gear if more appropriate.

We might be doing some snorkeling this summer and I thought a waterproof camera would be nice. A blind search on amazon brings a large selection, not sure which brands are best for this or which features are important. I don't ever foresee deep sea diving or that sort for this camera. If DS or DH want to engage in that down the road, a new camera might be part and parcel of that.

The camera might also go on kayak/rafting trips in the future.

Any guidance towards features to look for and/or brands is appreciated.

Id buy a GoPro!!!! It would be your most versatile choice!

Cheapest option if you already know a camera well is just getting a waterproof case... just something to consider.

We just got the waterproof film cameras, one for each kid, for when we were in Hawaii. The photos were just okay, and kind of difficult for the kids to operate, along with the snorkel gear I guess. The kids were 8 and 4, however, and I couldn't see spending a lot on something that conceivably could get lost in the ocean!!

A GoPro would be cool! But I think there are cheaper options that I considered on Amazon. Not the same as GoPro of course, but would have been ok.

DH says check The Wire Cutter and see if they have a recommendation.

My DS got this for Xmas and it's not as fancy as a GoPro works well and he used it in the pool. The GoPro accessories work with it

DH bought me a waterproof case for my cell phone. Took great pictures, was completely water proof, easy to use and was cheap! Less than $10.

Similar to the knock-off GoPro above, DS got this one for Hanukkah - I think someone here recommended it.

We have had great fun with it, but haven't used it underwater yet. We have attached it to the front of his scooter, and put it on his LEGO Technic pullback car.

We got this same one. We've put it on our dog and used it several ways, but like you, haven't tried it underwater yet.

I second this recommendation. We have this and it works great. DH has a GoPro too, but the Olympus pictures are better.

olympus TG-4 is awesome, got it last summer as my kids are finally swimming in water, we all had a lot of fun. it also shoots in raw format which is a plus for some. I bought mine refurbished from olympus site with a 20% sale for about 250$. they do it every few months. This summer i am adding a fish eye lens to the camera so I can capture more in frame.
