We have a kitchenaid (one of the mid-range ones with the third rack) and have been quite happy with it - we've had it for 2 years I think? We also looked at the bosch but the rack layouts just didn't fit our dishes as well and from previous experience I knew that would drive me absolutely crazy on a daily basis - I actually got rid of a relatively new dishwasher once because of it. Whichever you get, use the tablet detergent and experiment with the various cycles on your dishwasher to find what works best. We never use the heated dry cycle so I can't comment on that aspect, if that's an important factor for you.

There are lots of threads on this if you want to search.

Bosch! We have an 800 series model.

We've had it for 2 years I think. I like it because it's practically silent and I love, love, love the 3rd rack for all our utensils. I took out the silverware basket on day 1 and have never missed it.

Whatever you decide, take some of your biggest and most used dishes with you to the store. I was deciding between the Bosch 800 and the 800 Plus and the Plus model didn't fit my dishes well at all as the layout was totally different. I took my giant cutting board, large Pyrex dish, plate, bowl, tallest glass, and large reusable water bottle with me to the store to make sure it all fit. :)

Yes! I would look at Miele and Bosch. And definitely bring in your dishes. Some brands/types don't fit well in any dishwasher, but little differences in layout can make the difference on how often you have to run the DW. We have an 18" Miele - we have a small kitchen.

We have a Miele and love it. There was a Bosch here when we moved in but it was in such rough shape that it needed to be replaced. I love the built in water softener and the top rack for utensils. I also love how incredibly quiet it is...can't even tell if it's on.

We have this 18" Kenmore Elite (http://m.sears.com/kenmore-elite-18inch-built-in-dishwasher-stainless-steel/p-02214683000P?sid=IDx01192011x000001&gclid=CjwKEAiA3NTFBRDKheuO6IG43VQSJAA74F77frpdXkGS zBYpjDTAMne2RLm1V7qEpGH67jTlSsgfWRoC-Grw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds) because that is all that fits in our space (prior owners were empty nesters and took out the space for a full size) and are really happy with it. We have had it since 2013. It is super quiet as well and I rarely hear it. I would buy this one (when we redo our kitchen) full size model from Whirlpool Gold (this one has a plastic interior) (http://m.homedepot.com/p/Whirlpool-Gold-Series-Top-Control-Dishwasher-in-Monochromatic-Stainless-Steel-with-Silverware-Spray-WDT720PADM/205506919), but they also have it with a stainless interior (http://m.homedepot.com/p/Whirlpool-Top-Control-Dishwasher-in-Monochromatic-Stainless-Steel-with-Stainless-Steel-Tub-and-Cleaning-App-WDT995SAFM/300721610?cm_mmc=Shopping%7CTHD%7Cgoogle%7CD29+App liances&mid=sI42j4Xqw%7Cdm_mtid_8903tb925190_pcrid_1750853 62552_pkw__pmt__product_300721610_slid_&gclid=CjwKEAiA3NTFBRDKheuO6IG43VQSJAA74F77KZOELAsV FmB3pw1GNOUdeKPi97vZ5-9Py_vcF8Ks7xoC1Gfw_wcB) if that is a priority for you. I like that the silverware basket is on the door (or attaches to the outside of the basket). This is the Kenmore Elite version (http://m.sears.com/kenmore-elite-24inch-built-in-dishwasher-stainless-steel/p-02214753000P?sid=IDx01192011x000001&gclid=CjwKEAiA3NTFBRDKheuO6IG43VQSJAA74F77Pam-pshq15RD_omFoUAcwrUXveqR-kGP9yS_cxzkFxoCFq3w_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds) of the one we have, but the basket takes up real estate in the bottom of the dishwasher and I want all of plate space I can get.

If prices are less than $1000 I might consider a Miele, but when we were looking in 2013 their 18" model was $1400 (and DH was having a hard time with the $750 we paid for ours!).

We use Cascade ultra gel detergent (orange lid) in our dishwasher because the tabs were clogging our old 18" unit so we just decided it was easier to continue to use the gel instead of cutting the tabs in half.

Just got this Kitchenaid and I love it more than any woman should love a machine. Seriously awesome and so quiet. http://m.homedepot.com/p/KitchenAid-Top-Control-Dishwasher-in-Stainless-Steel-with-Stainless-Steel-Tub-ProWash-Cycle-46-dBA-KDTE104ESS/205904803?cm_mmc=Shopping%7CTHD%7Cgoogle%7CD29+App liances&mid=sPmQDLSZ3%7Cdm_mtid_8903tb925190_pcrid_1750853 62552_pkw__pmt__product_205904803_slid_&gclid=CMyEpqa0tNICFQJsfgodBOoDjQ
