My 13 year old needs to take Vitamin D supplements for 6 weeks. Do you gals have a favorite brand for yourself or kiddies? Thanks!

I've been using Sundown Naturals Vit D3 for the last 2 years. The label has a long list of what's NOT in it (e.g., gluten, artificial colors or flavors, sugar, etc etc), which is reassuring. The "softgels" are a decent size, pretty easy to take. And my CVS has a "buy one bottle, get one free" offer from time to time.

Sounds like this was prescribed for your 13 y.o., so I assume you were told what dosage to get. If not, be sure to check. Because Vit D is a trendy vitamin, you can find all sorts of dosage recommendations online, some of which are dangerously high.

We use Carlson for the kids and us, drops for the kids, Solar D Gems softgels for us. They have kept my vit D levels rising, and Carlson has a good reputation. We buy on Amazon.

My 13 year old DS1 takes 4000IU Carlson soft gels daily. His GI doctor was loving his vitamin level (86) at his last check. He takes them daily, year round. The proper dosage is 1000IU per 25lbs of body weight. We always take more vitamin D when we're sick as well.

Any chewable recs for Vitamin D3? DS just got tested today and his doc wants him on 2000 IU a day (should probably be higher based on his weight but we'll start there). DS will not swallow pills no matter how small and isn't too excited about the prospect of a liquid either.

ETA: prefer sugar-free, so gummies are usually out.

To answer the original question, DH and I take Viva Naturals (formerly Viva Labs) vitamin D3. It's a small softgel. We each take one 5000 IU softgel a day and D3 for both of us tests in the normal range. Not sure if it is available on other doses.

7 year old DS2 takes chewable vitamin D but they're gummies. Never heard of non-gummy chewable vitamin D.

But you can buy Carlson vitamin D drops in 1000, 2000, and 4000IU. Just one tiny drop is the amount so it's not a big deal at all and you can put the one drop on food if you want.

D3 should be taken with K2 to be properly absorbed, I take a liquid form of it by Buried Treasure, get it on Amazon, it's pretty sweet so he might like it.

We actually use Animal Parade chewable right now but it is only 500 IU. The drops sound like they might work though, thanks.

I read that Suntrex is a good product .... made from lichen not lanolin.

Just to update, I was able to find a 2000 IU chewable/quick-dissolve vitamin D, Natrol brand: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B004OCJVE6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1. DS likes it an I have used this brand's Biotin from Costco for a while now. I tried the Carlson drops but taking 30 seconds for a drop to come out of the bottle was ridiculous and then I wasn't sure how to get it into DS at that point. I also got this fast-melt K2, EZ-Melts brand: https://smile.amazon.com/EZ-Melts-Melting-Tablets-Supplement/dp/B00VXDXXM0/ref=sr_1_3_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1490545635&sr=1-3&keywords=k2+chewable. We will get DS's D3 levels rechecked in about a month so we'll see if the D3 is working.

We use these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EU6WUGG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

D and K2 are both more effective when taken together (google it) and these are very potent (IIRC it's 1000 IU D and 250 K per drop) so they last a long time.

THe Carlson drops SUCK for exactly this reason! The ones we use have a pressure dropper so you can control it much better. We use the dropper and just drop into our mouths, but you can also drop onto a spoon in case you ever decide to go that route again.
