DH are talking about taking a kid free trip to the keys this fall. He has never been and I have only been once...almost 20 years ago. Looking for recs for where to stay and what to do. We don't have a ton of extra cash, so looking to do this on a budget. TIA!

I'm far from a Florida expert but we bounced around all over the state last summer. The Keys were my least favorite thing. It is FAR. it is super crowded and touristy. Dining and drinks are pricey. The beaches are mostly private so pick a hotel with a nice beach. (we just came in for the day) You'll be going in the fall, so maybe not as crowded and expensive and surely not as hot (omg was it hot). I personally wish we'd have spent more time in St. Augustine......

I'm in Sarasota and the fall is GORGEOUS here. Siesta Key, Lido Key Venice Anna Maria Island. Siesta Key Beach rivals any I've been too. We are about an hour from Tampa ( if you are looking for flights) In season starts in October ~ ish September / early October is my favorite time of the year here.

When I went, I wasn't really impressed either. But it wasn't the best circumstances, so I was thinking that maybe clouded my opinion. DH has always wanted to go and he has a milestone birthday coming up, so that's why we are going.

DH and I went 8 years ago for our 5th anniversary. We basically wandered from Ft. Lauderdale down to Key West. We did snorkeling in Key Largo at Pennekamp Stake Park. Probably would have been a lot of fun except we were there in between two hurricanes and the water was really rough. Bahia Honda State Park has a nice beach. Key West beaches are man-made and not that exciting IME. We did the touristy stuff there: southernmost point, Hemingway's house, etc. Sunset in Mallory Square was fun, and the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen. Then we drove back to Miami and spent a couple of nights. I loved the beach there. Nothing was very crowded when we went (first week of September) but, like I said, we were there right in between two hurricanes, and they actually started voluntary evacuation of Key West the day we left, so I'm sure that had a lot to do with it. Overall, it was a really fun trip. I spent a lot of time on tripadvisor to plan.

Ah! :) Well then you should! It is pretty. What types of things is he up for? There is a lot of different stuff. We didn't plan, just kinda wandered and failed.....
