Looking for ideas, especially if it's not *super* religious (not sure how much DD would use or would be old enough to appreciate it). ;). She's not super girly, and doesn't have her ears pierced, so earrings are out; not sure she would enjoy/ appreciate a cross necklace or bracelet.

Also, it's really hard to find closed-toe dressy shoes in her size (about a 5/ 5.5, almost a women's size). She's very selective and doesn't want high heels or wedges or most of the styles that are in stores. Now that it's spring, I'm only finding sandals in stores. She did just get a pair of those in white, but I feel like it's not dressy enough for church/ first communion? (at least she won't be in a Catholic Church). I'll be checking out Nordstrom tomorrow, hopefully; everywhere else we've tried, she doesn't like the shoes. Anywhere else I should check? Would you let your DD wear white sandals to this? She'll also be attending a First Communion in a Catholic Church soon; I'm assuming those wouldn't be appropriate there?

Thanks in advance!

Have you checked payless or any place like that? Something like these http://www.payless.com/womens-betty-2pc-slingback/78188.html?dwvar_78188_color=smoothwhite#start=5 might work for her.

If you don't want a cross or other jewelry, what about a silver keepsake box? I got a cross from my parents and even though I didn't wear it all the time, it is still a special memory of the occasion.

Check zappos for shoes.

We just bought some cute, white "d"orsay" flats for my daughter for Easter from Janieandjack.com. http://m.janieandjack.com/shop/dept_item.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=25343743037308 90&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524443484500. Would your daughter wear something like that? They are a bit pricey but I'm thinking the price is worth it because my daughter will wear them all summer to church with sundresses this summer. It appears they don't have size 5 but d'orsay flats are really popular right now. I bet you could find them elsewhere.

But what about these? http://m.shop.nordstrom.com/s/nina-pegasus-flat-little-kid-big-kid/3841554?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&fashioncolor=SNOW%20WHITE%20%2F%20BLACK%20AND%20WH ITE. Or these http://m.shop.nordstrom.com/s/ruby-bloom-bea-ballet-flat-walker-toddler-little-kid-big-kid/4169657?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&fashioncolor=OFF%20WHITE.

Otherwise, if you can't find closed toe white shoes she likes for the church ceremony, I honestly don't think it matters that much. About 1/3 of the girls in Dd's first communion group last summer wore open-toe white summer sandals and looked darling. One even had the full veil and gloves with it. As for a gift idea, how a rosary bracelets? This one is pretty but delicate probably http://www.catholiccompany.com/speckled-murano-glass-blue-oval-shaped-rosary-bracelet-i32636/?sku=2003320&utm_source=google&utm_medium=products&aid=3317&adpos=1o4&creative=86358045278&device=m&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=CjwKEAjwoLfHBRD_jLW93remyAQSJABIygGpRWQzsBys 9zJLgOXiH6UsKdpZHKYudqs12AuiUA8NlhoCbTjw_wcB
This one is really pretty too http://www.catholiccompany.com/rose-crystal-bead-rosary-bracelet-i121058/?sku=2980139&utm_source=google&utm_medium=products&aid=3317&adpos=1o1&creative=86358045278&device=m&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=CjwKEAjwoLfHBRD_jLW93remyAQSJABIygGp8mQJStSm zygERIBpuVCtcwtoLvuXDzISVNiqnp1jRBoCF0jw_wcB.

Or a decorative scapular medal necklace? It has a be blessed but it can replace most of the cloth scapulars. This one is pretty and she could keep it on all the time. I really like the metal ones because they are durable for swimming. http://www.catholiccompany.com/sterling-silver-scapular-pendant-chain-i64917/?sli=2511800

Sorry, I just realized you said NOT a necklace or bracelet. How about a book? This bible has some really great advice sections in it and is easy to read https://www.abebooks.com/Catholic-Youth-Bible/21081992948/bd?cm_mmc=gmc-_-used-_-PLA-_-v01&product=COM9780884897958USED. Or this one is really good too. You could make it special by writing a personal note in the front for her or having her priest write something for her. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/mobile/p/friendship-with-jesus-pope-benedict-xvi/1104074401/2674832741783?st=PLA&sid=BNB_DRS_Marketplace+Shopping+Books_00000000&2sid=Google_&sourceId=PLGoP4449&k_clickid=3x4449.

My aunt got each one of my kids a picture in a frame of a guardian angel for the kids for their first communion. We put it up in their rooms. Would she like something like that? Our gift to our kids was to let them pick out a rosary of their choice in this really upscale catholic bookstore. DD got one that was made of rosewood and smelled like roses. Maybe you could just ask your DD. She might have something in mind that she would like to receive. Hth

I painted a cross keepsake box for DD1 at Color Me Mine, and I gave her a gold cross necklace.

My daughter wore open toed sandals for her first communion; thankfully our church didn't have rules against it, but I know some do. Kohls has some cute sandals this year, and they go up to a size 5.

I guess I am curious why you think wearing sandals is a bad thing is Catholic Churches or would be bad. Every single little girl in DD's first communion group wore white sandals from payless for the event. The only places to buy girls shoes that is less than a 30 minute drive are Target, Walmart and payless - we all had the same thought and went to payless and got the same sandals. It never occurred to me that sandals would be bad or banned and I have been going to a Catholic Church every Sunday for 40 years.

Thanks, Everyone!

I thought open-toed shoes (esp. sandals) would be frowned upon. We attend a very accepting Lutheran church, but will be attending a first communion in a Catholic Church in a very nice area this spring, and I thought they would be more conservative and traditional in what they'd expect of peoples' dress. Maybe it's more of a thing in Europe? (covered shoulders, skirts going to the knee, no shorts, etc.)
We tried Payless, Kohl's, JCPenney, TJMaxx, DSW, not sure where else. We don't have time to order & receive in time from Nordstrom, and DD didn't like what they had on their website as far as what we could get in store. I ended up buying a few pairs from Target and will switch them out tomorrow for smaller sizes. They're cute and won't break the bank if one of the pairs works out. It's still pretty chilly here, so she can wear them for Easter and then for any dressier Spring or Summer events. :)
