Do these need to be read chronologically?

Also, my DS saw the movie, which I think is based on the 1st book? And he read the 2nd book, and I was thinking of getting him the 3rd book for Easter. BUT I just read that the 3rd book is from the sister's point of view - will this still be good for a 9 year old boy? Or should I skip to the 4th book?

My 3 boys have been devouring those books. All of them. I bought them the set. I don't think they need to be read chronologically because mine have been trading them back and forth in no particular order. My 11yo likes them the most, though. My 9yo reads them but he is still happily rereading his Captain Underpants and Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. Every kid is different of course, and I've found my kids can enjoy all the books of a series except one book that they don't. So you just never know.
