I have a fever of 102.2. I've never alternated Advil and Tylenol for myself- how do you do it? I took Advil at 6:30pm tonight. When could I take Tylenol if needed? And then when could I take Advil again? Fun spring break. :( Thanks.

Tylenol is pretty useless, imo. I find ibuprofen to be enough. If your dose isn't cutting it, maybe add 200mg more instead of bothering with Tylenol.

The advil is every 6-8 hours, and tylenol every 4-6hrs. So if you haven't taken any tylenol yet, you could take some 2-3hours after the advil, then the advil again around 1am. It works out that you are taking something every 3 hours.
For example:
Advil 6:30pm
Tylenol 9pm
Advil 1am
Tylenol 4am
Advil 7am
Tylenol 10am
Advil 1pm
Tylenol 4pm

you just want to make sure you don't exceed 3000mg to 4000mg Tylenol in a 24hr period, and 2400mg advil. This is the usual recommendation to prevent liver and kidney damage. Of course, going over a bit one time is not likely to cause any problems, just doing so over the long term is were problems occur, especially when you are mixing things like cold meds and narcotic combination products like Vicodin that causes people to go over the limits without realizing it.

Definitely take 3 advil over 2.

The advil is every 6-8 hours, and tylenol every 4-6hrs.

Great thank you for the instructions. My Advil says i can take it every 4-6 hours thought (not 6-8hrs)? It also says don't take more than 6 advil per 24 hours which would be 1000mg, but it sounds like you're saying I could take up to 2400mg? thanks - I'm not thinking that clearly

You have the regular Advil 200mg (ibuprofen 200mg)? Nothing with PM (diphenhydramine) or a higher strength? I would guess the manufacturers are being careful with their recommendations, because we recommend 800mg three times a day (2400mg total) all the time.

That 800mg is the dosing we've been given at times. I wouldn't do it regularly but would for a day or 2 if sick.

I'd increase the Advil too. I actually called poison control for my DH who did something really dumb with my prescription ibuprofen (he used three and each was 600 mg!) and poison control said he'd pretty much have to take the whole bottle to have it be harmful. They did say it might cause tummy upset. But that's for 1800 mg at once!

Yes I have 200mg advil, nothing else in it, not PM. So I can take 3 of those at a time with a max of 2400mg per 24 hours?

Yikes re your DH! Good to know - thanks for the info!

You can take 800mg every 6 hours of the advil if it's really bad.

I would be cautious about the advil--try alternating at the lower dose at first before upping the dosage. It can be very hard on the stomach and of course the liver.

Rest, liquids, etc. Feel better soon!

You would take tylenol halfway between Advil doses. But, honestly? I would only take the dosage needed to help with pain and discomfort so you can get some rest. I would absolutely not obsess over bringing down the fever. The fever serves a purpose and that is not high enough to be worrisome. I will up my dose of Advil to 600-800 mg if I need to for pain. I really don't take Tylenol, but will give it to my kids for a really high fever.

I had to do this when I had a complicated root canal. Did it for a few days. Took alternating doses of 800 mg ibuprofen and the max Tylenol between 7 am and 11 pm--totally relieved my pain and is a far superior alternative to narcotics!!!

You can take up to 800mg of ibuprofen (Advil) every 6 hours. I'm not sure of the max dosage of acetaminophen (Tylenol), so I'd just take what the bottle recommends, every 4hrs. You want the 4 hours of Tylenol to cover the last two and first two hours of the Advil dosage.

I've never hear of doing it for an adult but echo with the other about upping the ibuprofen. I've done 800mg doses for things many times.
