I recently had my thyroid level checked due to my eyebrows falling out. A person suggested I get it checked. It came back in the normal range, but just barely. Mine came back as 0.580. So my doctor believes I am fine. Am I really? She asked me a series of questions and I feel between the eyebrows and gaining 20 lbs in the last year, maybe mine needs some help.

What exactly did they check? There are a whole range of thyroid hormones that can (and should) be checked to have a clear pircture of what's going on. I need to schedule myself so I do't have BDTD advice but I have gone to a few classes put on by a more holistic doc in my area and she has stressed that there is an entire pathway for all hormones and checking ONE factor ONE time doesn't give an accurate picture of what is happening. You can have adequate amounts of one hormone but your body isn't converting it into the next step properly so you are having symptoms of low thyroid, etc. This is one area where I feel like conventional medicine hasn't caught up to current thinking and best practices.

A few resources I have been poking around to educate myself

My doctor wants everyone at 1. The new recs (2013) are to stay below 2.5 or even 2. So with that, it seems you are fine. I'm talking tsh by the way.

Did they only check your TSH? Your TSH is great and wouldn't be causing hypothyroid symptoms (if you have low thyroid, your TSH is actually high). However, some of your other thyroid hormones could be off. My TSH was technically normal, but just by a smidge, 2.4 but my T4 was off. Now we keep my TSH no higher than 1.
