I posted in the carseat section but didn't get any responses and I'm hoping to find an answer in the next day or so before our long car trip so I'm posting here.

We bought a Graco 4ever to transition our DD2 from her infant seat (Chicco Keyfit). She will be one at the beginning of next month is weighs 20 lbs. When I put her in the new seat, it seems like the lower part of the straps is hitting her at the wrong spot. They are coming across her leg/thighs vs. being down by her hips. Its like she isn't big enough for it, even though it is supposed to be ok for newborns. We have tried with the infant padding in and out and tried all the different reclines and tried adjusting the harness height too, but nothing seems to change this. In all our previous seat for my older kids and her infant seat that part of the straps was much more on the hip area. Is this safe?? Do we need to adjust something else we are not seeing? Or is this seat not a good fit for her?

ETA: We were planning to switch her before the trip, as we had read the new recommendation that they be out of the infant seat by 1.

It is normal and safe for the leg straps to come across the upper legs instead of hips when you switch to a convertible seat, it just looks really weird the first time you see it!

It does look weird! How do you keep the straps from digging in to their legs when you tighten them? I'm thinking especially right now in the warmer months when the strap will sometimes be on bare skin (like when she wears a sundress or summer bubble/romper).

Make sure you don't over tighten the straps to keep them from digging in. I always have my DD in bike or cartwheel shorts anyway those help too

Ok- thanks. Is this just the way this one fits or are all convertibles like this now with the straps? My older kids are 8.5 and 7 and we had Britax seats which never posed this issue. I liked the way the straps laid on the hips much better. I find this hard to get tight without the digging in issue.

We used a Chicco Nextfit in my husband's car from the beginning and it fit that way. It was winter so he had pants on, but as long as the straps aren't too tight it shouldn't hurt her legs.

It's not uncommon but definitely not all convertible seats are like that. DS3 (18 months) is currently in a peg perego and it doesn't fit that way - I wouldn't necessarily by a new seat just for this issue though!
