Bob book sets are on sale for $6.40 each (lowest price ever!)! This is a price match to Walmart, if you prefer to purchase them there instead (Set 1 is backordered on Amazon, with a ship date of 1 to 3 weeks). These are great for emerging readers!

None of my kids showed any interest in bob books I had several sets 2 of which were unopened when I yard sale-d them Total waste of money take a look at the pencil drawing pages before you purchase.

Bummer they didn't work out for you! I know they don't get universal rave reviews here, but I think it's a great price to give them a shot! I recommend them with the caveat that yes, the illustrations and storyline are lacking (and honestly downright boring) for parents, but for our DD, it was a great introduction to phoenetics and confidence booster. Certainly not for every kid, but might be worth a try! I even have a friend who raved about them with her first kid and then her second kid wouldn't touch 'em! You never know!

Preschool prep DVDs and Books were much more engaging for mine.

It really depends on the kid, I guess. Both of mine really learned to read with the BOB books. They didn't care about the plot. They were just focused on their own ability to read a book! We had many other wonderful books I could read to them, but these were books they could read to me pretty much right after letter and sound recognition kicked in mid-pre-school. All the other "early readers" were a bit too difficult for the kids to read every word at that very, very beginning stage. We have the whole series of BOB books, but I would say that by the time your kids are really reading, they can move on to other, more exciting series. The BOB books are best for enabling non-readers who know their letters to become readers. My kids developed an affection for them, though, and my son, who's a very advanced reader going into third grade, will still sometimes pull them out to read with my rising kindergartener. Their favorite is "Plums," which they read like it's a very profound poem or something. It's cute to watch!

Agreed. I think the simplistic pictures and plot really kept their focus on the words themselves rather than the pictures and it was such a confidence booster for mine to read a whole book. Mine were frustrated with more difficult ones and learned from Bob books and would read them to their stuffed animals. I never owned them - just library checkout because it's such a quick transition of a month or two of reading all the bob books to wanting to move onto bigger ones, but I found them wonderful.
